Yes, it's a Donkey T cover in the style of an Appalachian shoe-gazer duet. He doesn't think I should over-explain it, so just listen:
One Thing Only [3M]
Lyrics & stuff
Original version from the KvR Sept 2004 competition [2M]
Thanks for the great source material Donkey Tugger! Comments are welcome.

Great song!
Nah, the original was just f**king about a bit with the acoustic, this makes it into a proper song. Of course it's flawed technically and all that, as I said to George, but it has great spirit and shite in the singing and playing. One is humbled!

Cool stuff... nicely done
so who's the female singer? and is that live drums?... damn it I want you to "over-explain"!!
Think I'd like to hear more of a contrast between the chorus and verse. like adding a simple repeating guitar riff (the guitar is almost doing something like I'd expect, but bringing it forward more)... I'd also like to hear some fast strumming guitars.. kinda brought forward in the bridge... kinda folk style... But having said that, the way it is at the moment makes it sound as though it's being played live, which is cool too... so...erm... just ignore me...

Of course I'm flawed technically and all that, which is why I don't feel comfortable being called a "musician." It's just for fun.
And the singing... Well, truth is I did it all myself at first (and not too well) but my wife (who was forced to hear it on CD every time we got in the car) eventually grew to love it and could sing the parts better than me. She thinks it's not as cool if one performer does all the vocal tracks alone - says it's better to use the band. I guess I agree but I think it's more a case of necessity that one does all the harmonies. Anyway we decided to tag-team it.
Dobro eh, well that is more the traditional Appalachia, but even in the deepest bottom of a holler you can find MTV on the cable or satellite, McDonald's and Starbucks, so one can't be too sure.
Drums are not exactly live. There are live elements, but there's a fair amount of cut-n-paste and even a bit of classic John Bonham in the "loud" parts.

pah... every musician has flaws... even donks...
...
your always learning and improving (though i think recently I've started to regress! though that might be through lack of practice!)
Your wife has a nice voice. You should do more songs togather..

This is almost right out of Dilbert - I was once asked to describe bugs in my company's software as 'sub-optimal features'. I said no.donkey tugger wrote:They're not flaws, they're 'features'Glooper wrote:pah... every musician has flaws... even donks......

Ahh, it was from years ago when my mates band recorded a demo in some grotty studio. There were loads of mistakes and stuff that they wanted to re-record but the crap engineer kept saying, 'nah, leave it lads, it's a feature'.Hovmod wrote:This is almost right out of Dilbert - I was once asked to describe bugs in my company's software as 'sub-optimal features'. well, a few flaws are part of what makes music interesting.
computer-perfect songs can be so boring..
you should re-record this and substitute "ping" for "thing"

Ahh, that Alison Krauss track is nice. She's always playing around my area, maybe I should get out to see her. I love the dobro sound, but alas I have none to use - nor the ability to play it if I did. I do have a ukulele which I hope to feature some day.
And I think we'll be doing more family harmonizing too. I've got (as Donkey says) a girly pop song that I'm finishing up called "Accomplice" that I hope to post soon. It's very summery and very flawed!
Our singing together is finally getting to the point where the sum comes out better than the parts. I'm not really after perfect recordings. I just want to capture the moment and make it feel good enough that you don't care about the, er, features... Leave perfection for the people who know what they're doing ...like Alison Krauss.
