In November Dweezil and Ahmet with lots of people who used to be in the Zappa band are going on tour. So far, Flo and Eddie (Volman and Kaylan) are the only ones officially confirmed, but there are more.

The Zappa kids doing dad's songs!

They're coming to Norway!
I'm going!

Wow... hope they get a lot of the original bunch back! I'll never be able to see 'em but what a show it would be...

Scott Thunes is one of my closest friends.
He hasn't mentioned anything about this.

hmmmmm...

I think Scott is one of the most talented bass players ever, and the job he did training the 1988 touring band was unparallelled in the history of teenage rocking combos! I am infinitely impressed. Please relay this from a long time fan.

It's all over the net these days, going under the name of "TOUR DE FRANK".

I know there was a lot of shameful stuff going on in that band towards what became the end of the 1988 tour which at least indirectly had to do with Scott, but I can't imagine that will have anything to do with it..... ???

Anyway, I'm thrilled to see the first "official" presentation of FZ's music since 1991, and tell Scott
his contribution to the last few FZ bands did not go unnoticed. We all know.

Edit: if you're a friend of Scott's, I feel like I'm a fan of YOU, that's how devoted I used to be... :hihi:

Yeah, lot's of bad blood at the end there although he did go on to play with Dweezil for a few years right after that. He also performed with Keneally (sp?) at the Zappa fest in Germany last summer some pics.
Scott's a very sensitive and sometimes misunderstood person. I could see how his personality would clash with people sometimes. He's a really great guy though. He's not really involved in much music for years now, just raising a couple of kids and being a regular guy.

He's going to be playing bass on a song for me this Sunday hopefully. I'll be posting it in the cafe when it's all mixed.

I love the 1988 band. Heck I love them all!

I would ring up fellow Austinite Terry Bozzio to play on one of my songs, but there is the matter of that pesky restraining order . . . .

I'm looking forward to it already.

Cheers.

I mailed him to get his thoughts on the Zappa deal.
I'll let you know what he says about it.

Yeah? Thanks!

Of course, there has been many accomplished bass players in that band, and if they're going back to Flo ans Eddie days, maybe Scott is simply too young... :)

Is it likely that any of the early Mothers (besides Flo and Eddie) might get in on this? Or are there other bits of bad blood about? :-S Forgive me for asking, I really am ignorant when it comes to personal-relationship stuff regarding musicians.

I talked to Jimmy Carl Black once, and that whole band sort of quit in 1969 over money. I've read all sides of this case from all sorts of media, but JCB did have some opinions on FZ's handling of people and cash that hadn't really made it to the press...
But even not knowing anything else, a band of this magnitude playing music of this quality and complexity holding auditions for every spot several times a year (wanna be in the band? Come over and try to impress me more than my current bass player/drummer/whatever) is probably going to yield some bad blood, isn't it...
I don't know though. Just guessing.

Edit: But most of the old boys have at some point toured with the Grandmothers, so the music and the atmosphere must have appealed to them...

*nod* "If we'd all been living in California..." and the whole musical competitive thing. *sigh*

I have a Grandmothers album (yeah, vinyl, heh).

I had JCB sign my Beat The boots T-shirt.
After the concert I had to give it a wash. The autograph was of course an easy prey for the detergent, leaving me with a story and no autograph.
I KNOW I talked to him, though...

Hey: This might even convince Scott...

THIS is infuriating, because the BUY TICKET option doesn't work... aargh

Scott Thunes' reply to me...

"can you believe it? I f**king heard about this LAST NIGHT from old DAN
THOMPSON
who played at the Pint with his LA band, King Straggler.
He told me he 'found Dweezil a keyboard player'...
The world is a strange and f**ked up place. Why the f**k would they
waste their time performing his songs?
Dweezil, last time I checked, had about 200 songs of his own, most of
them pretty damn good, if I do say so myself.
Whatever. Hope he plays up here. I'd take you."

So yeah, I guess he wasn't asked...
