I gotta say: that FabFilter Volcano - I think it might be the best one I've tried so far; Their filters are silky-smooth, and the grahpical display really lets you visualize your settings. Very cool. Wish it was a tad cheaper (not that they don't deserve to get paid, I'm just broke).

I think all these filters are very cool, but the prices are pretty insane.
The standalone filters that I have, I use them on pretty much everything when called for: drums, guitar, bass, synth, etc....

I'm surprised; FabFilter's synth cost half the price of Volcano...I would've thought a synth was more complicated.

Nitro is a fantasticly flexible machine but IMHO it's filters are not even close to being in a same league as volcano. However, the machine is not even marketed as just a filter plugin. It's a true multieffect plugin. Kind of like a mini-eventide wrapped in pretty graphics!

Nitro is mas macho, and it gets used heavily around my place, but yeah, Volcano's filters are way way smoother. I'm liking Volcano a lot, and I own FF1, so it's only $99. Gonna go play with it some more...

How can a separate filter plug effectivly process a polyphonic audio stream ? Well, maybe trancey stuff; but any host filter can do that.
I still cannot see how a stand alone filter could ever be prefered to a full synth which can be used in a filter-only mode.
