Lately Iv been finding myself using more and more free and shareware programs. The truth is that there are some f**king amazing software out there, and it dont cost a penny piece (as Im sure many of you already know!). So I thought better late than never, I'll jump on the freeware band wagon! Right now Im trying to replace all of my software, and see if i could actually function using nothing but freebies (temporarily ofcourse, but who knows

).

So far I have,

Plus a bunch more, I'll have to find a sampler and drum module when i get chance. I'll probably do a drum sampler in SE, then get the CM sampler.

So, I think I have most of my bases covered hear except for one crucial element - I dont have a sequencer! I feel it would be cheating to include run all this lot in SX and call it a freeware setup. So, is there such thing as a freeware host sequencer? I heard Tracktion went free, but it seems that was a flash in the pan.

Frieve Music Studio Producer is a full featured free audio/midi sequencer...

computer muzys isnt STRICTLY freeware (and some of those apps are donationware or shareware betas which is stretching things a little possibly if you want to try a TRULY free setup) ...

... as for a freeware sequencer ... thats tricky ... theres krystal audio engine (soon to go commercial though) but thats audio only ...

... i THINK your only free MIDI / audio option is the 'producer' version of music studio independence ...

To be honest, my requirements from a sequencer a quite high. I like to do a lot of audio editing, hard processing, routing etc. Its unlikely that i could find a freeware host that would do the job properly. But if i can get something that will allow me to run plugin instruments, and mix them with plug in fx, then I should be able to making it work.

I was thinking about using Audiomulch, but that aint really freeware, and not exactly a sequencer. I think I'll have a mooch about and maybe try a combination of a couple of appz. I have a spare PC in bits, with an old SBlive, so it will be interesting to get this 'uber-budget' system up and running.

In Computer muzys you can load only 5 instruments and work with only 8 mixer channels.
Frieve Music Studio Producer is pretty bug-ish.

Make loops in FL studio demo and sequence them in kristal or ACID express.

ahh...freeware sequencers.

try the steinberg ftp archives here and look for a program called Cubasis Inwired.

I can help with your drums much more, though.

Check this free sampler of which I had nothing to do with and this free 18.something Mb drum library I made. Spe3d has changed that you have to log in to go there, so you may need to create an account there first.

The GUI is very smart & familiar, similar to a Steinberg interface!
Emphasis & development so far is on Audio production rather than MIDI.
Rock solid, VST FX compatible & best of all completely free!

Cool, so by the looks of thing then it really is possible to notch up a fully functioning DAW for absolutely f**k all. Amazing! And with all the freeware samples, you really could get your cake and eat it. I am now seriously thinking about producing an album using nothing but freeware, and telling everyone I had like 10 Virus's running into PT HD.

Lol, how many do you reckon I'd fool?

btw, I am most suprised by the amount of sound synthesis programming software that can be acquired for free. Stuff like CLAM, Csound, Supercollider etc is pretty mind blowing stuff, far surpassing what commerical plugins can do. And to think I almost sold my granny for a Kyma last year

Although I still havent ruled that out!

Wow, that looks pretty sweat! I work mostly with audio anyway, totally when mixing. I guess I could sequence stuff and then import into Krystal.

Hey, just had a thought...

Is EnergyXT any good? Iv heard alot of talk about this fella, but never used it before. Isnt it kind of like a router for VST plugins?

Might have to get this in the list too if theres a free version

you prolly didn't read my reply...someday I will type much faster and everything will be alright...

anyway eXT is a full blown host and sequencer. unfortunately, the whole thing costs $50 for a key and in the demo you can't save anything. It is a VERY capable piece of software, but yes, the part of it most people like is the routing part and how it can be used as a VST that hosts other VSTs. Like I said above, 4 (5

) posts ago, there used to eb a pretty good free sequencer named cubasis inwired on the ftps at steinberg.

would trackers count? Buzz, pyscle... I use buzz for almost all of my sequencing and production, it's free, and has really nice vst support. works alot like fruityloops for me.
