does anyone have any tube gear that just sits in there chain just to add character :?: im looking to see if voxengo warmifier can get close. if i can get some audio files of some wet and dry drums, guitars or bass it would help alot.im looking at a purchase!i like how warmifier sounds but im looking to see how close i can get to some real tube gear.

Antares Tube, IK Amplitube.

Depends what tube gear you like... There is tube gear that sounds as transparent as top-notch transistor gear, and there is crap-sounding tube gear.
The spectrum between is very broad, so its more a matter of taste than "sounding like real stuff", since any setting may only sound like one specific setup.

im looking for that pultec 1s3 low end. does antone no whats the model of those tubes :?:

You have 2 real choice:

1) buy a UAD-1 DSP card that features a lot of warm (pultec, LA2A, urei, fairchild). The only VST that sounds exactly like a tube!!!

2) Buy an external tube preamp or compressor/eq (ART, Behringer are very cheap...)

If U look for a third choice, a bit less effective, U can look for PSP stuff (like vintagewarmer) or IK multimedia stuff.

i often use ruby-tube a very good freebie that rivals antares tube IMO. It might not be subtle enough for your taste though - I mostly use it for bass and drums.
I've heard good talk about Tbt's new saturated driver as a replacement for vintagewarmer. It's a compressor though, and I never personally used it just to warm. Since they are both excellent and free plugins it wouldn't hurt to download them and see if they fit. You most definately will find some good use for them.

I use T-RackS. It sounds great. I can't comment on how "accurate" to tube sound it is, but like C00kie wrote, it's more a matter or taste. Personally, I think good sound (= appropriate sound, or tasteful sound) is more important than accurate emulation.

If you want Voxengo, you better look at LampThruster, which has a more clearly audible effect (a.o. Tube and Vintage settings). I think Warmifier is supposed to have a much more subtle effect.

btw Voxengo also have a free amp sim (but I don't know the name right now...)

I got a behringer tube mic pre and tube compressor. I think they help for guitar, rhodes and miced piano...

My guitar goes through a Marshall JMP-1 valve preamp (and a small mixer) before entering the computer, whether I want clean sound or distortion, I let the Marshall do it.
I bought it used for about USD150 or so, and I'm very happy with it.
No plugin I've tried can compete. It might be psychological (it IS a Marshall...), but I still think the valve amp does a better job, especially the clear channels pushing slightly into overdrive... Yum...

Considering this question makes my mood become dark, brooding, and deeply philosophical. Not to mention a bit of a ham...

Tube or not tube: That is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mix to suffer
The chill antisepsis of digital oscillators,
Or to drop Vintage Warmer in the aux that troubles,
And by tweaking blend them.

Since "dust" means idiot in Norwegian, I've always had my own little slant on the phrase "quintessence of dust"...
