Hi,

I use Logic silver and I use a lot of sampled loops that come on CDs. What software could I use to play back those loops in tempo with my sequencer? Anything out there like Phatmatic, which can be used as a plugin in a sequencer and plays back loops in tempo.

PS. no, I won't buy Live :)

Well, you almost answered yourself: Phatmatik would do.
As a cheaper solution you may want to try ConcreteFX' MicroDicer (PC only).

Mind you, all of those slicers will only do a good job on loops with strong transients and very few ringing notes (such as cymbals). In that case you need some stretching application and for realtime useage Live would most likely indeed be your best bet. Or you may have to entirely switch sequencers and go for Cubase. Or buy a Mac and Logic Express.

of course not,, Live is form much more than just playing back some loops lol, theres lots of loop players here on kvr for free even, search the instruments listing for samplers/loops

Intakt seems to be a good investment. I have planned to buy East West Orchestra Silver edition, is this a waste of money, since it too uses the Intakt engine? Would there be better libraries to purchase FOR Intakt instead?

Also, is Intakt compatible with Kontakt instruments? Most of the sample libraries seem to state that they are compatible with Kontakt, but no word about compatibility with Intakt and Kompakt. And what's the difference between Intakt and Kompakt? I'm confused

Intakt won't load Kontakt files properly, due to the completely different featureset.
I'd think about getting Intakt twice though. If you ask me, a slicer being able to export individual wave files (such as Phatmatik) along with a drum machine allowing for drag and drop of wavefiles (such as Battery or DR-008) will take you quite further.
