SIR---how good?

Any complaints about SIR beyond the latency, as compared to Pristine Space and various others costing actual amounts of real money?
Just curious,
Dave

Dave - I advise you A/B SIR against some of the other convolution engines. Every developer has made a different set of tradeoffs in order to achieve reasonable performance, and these tradeoffs can have differences in the sound. Pristine Space, to me, sounds a hair cleaner than SIR, but that may be a matter of taste. Convo Boy is also well regarded, as are the much more expensive plugs from Apple, Waves and Tascam .... hope this helps!

You'd be hard pressed to hear a difference...I've never heard anything to make me want to waste cash. If you want the extra features on others, then it may well be worth buying, but as far as sound quality goes, as long as you use quality impulses, SIR is fine for me (and I'm pretty picky about reverb).

I guess with P. Space, you get 64 sample latency, which is a plus if you want to use, say speaker impulses while you track, which I might do for bass.
I got the ConvoBoy demo, so I'll give that a whirl.
SIR seems fine for mixing, though.
I love free, nice things!
Thanks for the input,
Dave

Ooo - don't apply any effects while tracking ... Yeah - SIR sounds so good it's hard to see any reason to buy the others. PristineSpace sounds slightly different, probably cleaner, but for some reason that doesn't necessarily mean better. Latency is no problem at mix time. Convolution is limited - get a good algorithm reverb such as ArtsAcoustic instead.

I think Frippertronix wants convolution reverbs to apply cab sims to his bass recordings and not as a reverb. A good sound in the monitors is sometimes essential for the player.greendoor wrote:Ooo - don't apply any effects while tracking ...
@Frippertronix: you can use the free Revolverb for real time monitoring (hardly noticable latency) and replace it with your convolution plug-in of choice at the mixing stage

For tracking bass, I wouldn't worry about having a realtime convolution of a cab. I think most bass players would agree that you can track it without even monitoring it at all.
A dry signal would be more than adequate. One thing's for sure-- you won't be using SIR in realtime with any sort of efficiency.

Well, try out my impluses(at noisevolt) with SIR, Convoboy and Pristine Space and tell me what you think. I prefer SIR, though Pristine Space is not bad.
