Hi,

Just wanted to know if there are any guitar player(s) who suffer(s) from arthritis here.

Thanks

I have sore knees (and a very arthritic late grandmother) but I tend to play standing up ;)

Tough luck mate, let's hope they'll come up with some cure one day...

Maybe you could have your body fat balance checked - according to some belgian doctor, "depression and other civilisation diseases that come with inflammations" can be cured by improving your animal vs. fish (omega3) fat balance...

think my problem is more to do with prolonged mouse use rather than arthritis. can't really play keys or guitar anymore though, whatever it is. :(

Try something else then.

I use a trackball at work.

Me. It's very sad, very painful at times, and sometimes I cannot even tie my shoelaces or open a cereal box. Other times the pain isn't so bad and I can play some decent riffs, but I mostly stick to keys nowadays -- since it's not just pain, it's the actual deformity of my thumbs turning inwards towards my palms. Hydro-Cortisone helps, but the shots are painful and not so easy for me to get here. :(

It wasn't so long ago (it seems) I could have kept up with any of the best guitar players I've heard in here in both style and speed, but those days are gone I guess.

Why do you ask this question? 8)

I have a 'reno' symphtom - my hands are always cold (even in the summer) and i can't move my fingers fast enough.

Is that what they call repetitive strain injury? Don't sound to good.

For the strain from the mouse, get used to using your left hand for the mouse so you can switch off from time to time to give the right hand a rest.

I had to give up on the guitar a few years ago. I can play, but don't want to make things worse. The use of my hands for other things is far more important than the guitar.

I find using my computer keyboard with a program like Trollo is good. I don't have to play hard as there is no purpose in it. Even playing softly on most music keyboards is a strain on your hands.

Most regular computer mice encourage wrist stress... the worst thing is that side twisting motion. You know, you keep your arm resting on the desk, and want to move left, and you just rock your hand to the left while holding the mouse. For most people, that's the killer motion...

A better design that works a charm for me is the Contour Mouse... it's huge, about the size of your whole hand (they come in like seven sizes, left & right handed), and because of the size it encourages you to use your arm muscles to move the mouse. You keep your hand and wrist position constant and move your arm, instead of doing that damaging side twisting motion in your wrist.

It's awkward at first, you can adjust in a few weeks... For me a trackball never felt right, but the contour mouse has been perfect.

Have you tried starfish oil / glucosamine? Definately helps me.

I am a serious gout (a form of arthritis) sufferer, or at least I used to be VERY serious. It almost incapacitated me as guitaist. I changed my diet some years back and it got me back playing again. My left wrist still can not bend closely good anough to do any Van Halen stuff, but I survive.

Check out the internet resources.

The most important part of my diet was to cut down on red meat and abosolutely ZERO wine (whiskey tastes much better anyway).

Could you tell us more about this "reno symptom"? I think I may have it. Does it also involve cold feet and toes?

I had Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both of my wrists and I still have a good deal of stiffness from it. I also had torn rotator cuffs in both of my shoulders and my arms are still weak from not using them. I also had DeQuevain's Syndrome, which is related to CTS and caused pain in the ball of my right thumb. And finally, I have neck, shoulder, and back pain from un-ergonomic seating arrangements combined with my terrible posture.
