I want to try and learn FM synthesis tonight, and since I haven't bothered with FM synths I don't know which ones are the best. I do know of FM7 but I don't have that money to blow. Does anyone have any suggestions on which FM synth to try? Free or at a low price please. Thank you!

Image-Line's DX10 is a good place to start for only $19.

Maybe check out Foorius, Oxe FM, Ganymed and Vivaldi. All are free, except Foorius which is donationware (but one heck of a synth).

Beyond that, my best recommendation would be to build a simple one in Synthedit from scratch, then you'll know exactly how everything works. Read through the stuff on FM in the help file, too.

sytrus also.. I think that covers them all.. :hihi:

Vivaldi MX
MDA DX10

You may also want to use smexoscope to look at
the shapes of the waveforms as you fiddle with the
controls. It helped me quite a bit.

Guess it depends on what you call a "low price". If you're like me, there's free, then there's too high.

ej and Toxic are great, but not cheap for my change purse. So, that leaves free: I'd suggest OXE because it not only sounds good but also has a pretty standard interface; so it'd be good for learning on. Vivaldi MX sounds good too, but is a little less intuitive interface-wise.

FM7's where it's at, though. :hihi:

yeah MDA DX10 like lorenzo said.. :hihi:

Too bad I can't be where FM-7 is :-D So MDA DX10 it is. Thanks everyone.

Uh oh, it seems their website is down. I'm patient though. Am I in for a rough ride trying to learn FM?

See it is for reasons like this that I so wish I could program synths. I would be turning them out every week. You know, it is a dream of mine :P

Is'nt The Lizard(Krakli I think) an FM synth? It does the most wonderful sounding basses!

Also, UNO FM sounds great too, and comes with really good presets. They're doing a patchbank competition this month for it on www.patcharena.com, so some more great sounds should be forthcoming.
