The previous discussion was really helpful - still a little confused as to the virtues of Fraunhofer versus LAME. At this point I have the Sonar4 LAME encoder and the Wavelab encoder - not sure what it is....

At any rate, I'm doddering...my question is given the loss at 128kb does it make any sense to refrain from mixing a piece until it's in mp3 form...in other words - render to mp3 first and then do the eq/comp/limiting?

Also, I'm probably gonna be starting my own webpage for streaming my pieces. Would it be inconsiderate to encode at 196 instead of 128 in order to maintain artistic integrity...or would that download too slow or be not playable (for whatever reasons) for folks?

Thanks

no because then you are converting from uncompressed to mp3 then back to uncompressed for mixing and then back to mp3. since mp3 is a lossy format this will sound a lot worse than just converting once.
