This drives me fuckin insane!!

People putting so much time, energy and money into writing songs that sound like a million other songs?

Don't people understand that to write outstanding music you need to do something different? Push the boundaries? Surprise people??

Post

Yep, thats reason why I hate pop. Same harmonies, same stupid texts.

Post

why do people feel the need to preach from on high like they're so much better than everyone else?

Yeah I agree. But I find this problem of unoriginality even more present in less commercial music, like trance, techno, dnb etc

People want to get signed; yet it never seems to occur that they need to do something special to get noticed in the first place.

And no matter how many times you tell them this, it never seems to sink in ..

Perhaps it's more of a problem here in Australia; where for some reason the people that are interested in electronic music are (for a large part) retarded ...

The problem isn't pop music but that these days it is being made by completely talentless people.

The music industry has been taken over by such a bad case of mediocrity that I fear we have entered a new Dark Ages.

Interestingly, the worst music is what you hear on the radio. Television and advertisement music isn't anywhere near as bad.

oh god

the problem is this...to get signed, people want to show that they "get it" and can write hits. Most people wil never write a hit. Some will. A small percentage of that group will do it in an original way that works for the masses. They will be the bands/musicians that you like.

Not true.

I have just finished writing a play with songs in it. Now maybe the songs are not outstanding, that is for others to decide, but they are all based on music from previuos decades ie 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. To understand what made these styles unique I had to study and learn songs and music from that decade eg Eddie Cochran, psychadelic music, Eddie and the Hotrods, Depeche Mode etc.

This extends top all forms of music and often what you find is that what you think is your original idea was done by somebody before you.

To appreciate where you are and where you are going you have to know your past. Somebody else put it far more eloquently "If you know history, you will know where you are coming from..."

sorry but I read your post as quite patronising, that's all.

ok i'll be more specific - people want to write a good trance or drum n bass song; yet they go straight for the same drum sounds, synths, sequencing techniques and feeling of every other standard trance or drum n bass song

i just feel somewhere along the line people are putting more effort into sounding the same as the others (ie "if this sounds the same as this successful song, i will be just as successful") than writing something worthwhile...

am i wrong?

possibly ...

ah okay I see what you mean. For myself (bear in mind it is only a hobby for me), I started by trying to sound like my 'heroes' as it were, then realised that I couldn't, now I settle for what appears to be my sound - limited by ability. But I see what you mean and yes you're right - perhaps most noticeable in music charts.

That said, you often see when someone puts a track on KVR that listeners provide feedback that often suggests ways to sound more in line with what they were expecting, i.e. adheres to the formulas.

The reason for this conformism is the music industry itself (or just industry in general) - if it sells, do it again. For example, the record stores only stock what sells, and the only music that charts and gets wide exposure is that which sells, kind of a vicious circle. I find this frustrating, the music I want to buy isn't readily available.

maybe it's because trying to be oh-so-f**king-different is so pathetic?

well, there is a fine line between being different/unique and shit.
