why pick on love songs?
Why do people feel the need to write standard music?

I feel that there are many many bands that have pioneered ways and quirks. In my opinion beatles, the cure, radiohead, and bands like that have really pushed the limits of music. For me, when I write music and people ask what I write, I don't know what to tell them... I mean what the hell are you supposed to say? I say encourage everyone around you to pioneer to push their ideas into space and beyond. I have seen and heard a lot of mediocrity, all you have to do is twist it up a bit and it can become a work of art, that can stand on its own.

I recognize that the beatles tipped their hat. I mean listen to radiohead's karma police, the piano line was a total tip of the hat to beatles "sexy sadie". But nonetheless they kept stretching their wings, is my point. So they took the listener further, deeper. I think that's what people are talking about. I personally love and thrive off of innovative artists that keep going places, using any means necessary to expand their atmosphere and approach.

clueless is a philosopher! (could he use such a wonderful picture if he wasn't, I ask you. And philosophers who make people laugh are rare in this world...). And thanks for the love songs , they both are VERY nice songs... (By the way, why crying; otherwise sometimes loving makes you cry.)

This topic reminds me of something my piano teacher said, when I was totally into Keith Jarrett. He said that, as far as he was concerned, I could listen exclusively to Beef Carrot, learn his solos by heart (AS IF!!), play the same standards with the same forms, lineup, improvisation...
...and still sound nothing like Keith Jarrett.
I get as uncomfortable as the next muso when someone says a tune of mine "sounds a bit like..." but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a SINGLE artist who didn't sound a BIT like another one. That's music, I'm afraid!
Therefore, I'm with the guys who say live and let live - if you're into cheesy pop, go hard! If you want to shock people with weird shit, go hard! As long as you believe in it, there's a chance someone else will, too.
