i should check out dr008 some more, i own it but havent ever figured out all that 'inner stuff'

Hey pannewb: thanks for the Xoxos Murder tip - that's a great plug-in! I found the default "Soft Distortion" and "Classic Sine Spread" presets sounded really great on acoustic drums, I see this becoming very useful from now on.
Distortion is a great method. Camelphat is exceptional on drums (plus it has compression and the "Magic EQ" for kick drums), and if you use Cubase SX, the Quadrafuzz plug-in gives you full multiband control over distortion.
Amen to layering samples, I do this all the time with Kontakt; often I have one dry kit as one instrument and a wider, more compressed room-kit instrument to mix in, mixing and matching samples from many collections.

ohjeah, i find that a good reverb can let the snare sound brighter and bigger, snare+clap together can also sound great, just try different methods, layering oder compressing togehter, its so multifunctional.
