Does everyone around the world know about Ebert and whoever? Roper? Film critics. Anyway, for those that do I have a little commentary to share. Movie ads tend to quote them with the "two thumbs up" approval when they get it. You never hear "one thumb up" so pretty much BOTH people have to like it or you're screwed. Well, now it seems it isn't enough to just have two thumbs up even. It has to be "two thumbs WAY up".
I assume that will be out-dated at some point by "two thumbs WAY WAY up" or maybe they'll start adding other fingers too. Otherwise they didn't leave much room for expansion.
The 5 star system is much better really.
(of course you get into 5 1/2 stars and then 5.5875 stars squared)

This phenomenon has perplexed me for quite some time.
I'll watch their show every once in a while, but I'll never notice them say, "Two thumbs WAY down!" Some movies truly deserve such recognition
Furthermore (and this is a bit off topic), movie previews rarely show off the bad reviews
. I can only think of two examples (Old School and Joe Dirt), and you know what, I personally think that part of the reason why Old School became so popular (at least in the U.S.) was because of the previews showing off the bad reviews. It was a breath of fresh air, instead of the usual "riveting", "brilliant", "edge-of-your-seat", and the worst of all, "electrifying" (do I seriously want to be electrified during a movie?
)
@Jeez: You know what, I have a good friend who has half of a thumb........ so it is possible.....

Right on Dave. It is not the deepest or most informative rating system ever devised. Is it?

Here in Melbourne we've got a film reviewer who does regular reviews in the newspaper. There's the regular system of five stars right down to half a star... but below that, instead of no stars, there's... The Dog!
Only extra-specially crap movies get The Dog. I think Miss Congeniality 2 was a recent one.
Forever,
Kim.
