Freakin' stoked. Talked the lad at the local GC down to 350 and then mentioned it wasn't a necessary purchase at-the-moment and that'd I'd wait until the current UA Promotion (LA2A, already have it) didn't mean much to me so he dropped it to 309. :D

Just got it installed and even bought the PultecPro EQ minutes ago.

I'm in UAD-1 Heaven.

Yeah, I had my first UAD-1 for about a year and half and then got a cheap Project Pak (with a free Pultec Pro), for $339.00, for the added DSP. For my home studio mixes, (2) cards, is all I need. I can easily get 16-25, of the premium plugins(1176LN, LA-2A, Fairchild, Pultec, EMT Plate 140, DreamVerb, Cambridge, Precision Limiter, etc.) in a project, before I even have to start being concerned, with my DSP usage. :D

:D you lucky duck. i can't even buy a power supply (im making a daw) becuase things are really tight right now.
be part of the solution, not the problem

i want a 3rd now!

when mastering at 96k i almost max out my 2 cards..
MUST HAVE MORE POWER SCOTTY! :hihi:

good price :)

I'm considering a third myself. Especially with the Roland Space Echo and chorus plugs coming.
For making music sound big and full of character, UAD has no competition for me.
Funny because a few years ago I bought one and sold it because my monitors were poor and I couldn't hear how much better than the rest they really were. When I bought new monitors, I got another and the sound consistently blows my mind (to say the least).

How's the latency with effects on these cards? I've often heard they're great in mastering but not so much for real time (at least with timing sensitive effects, less so with reverb and such).

there not reallz made for real-time stuff.
If u set ur soundcard-latency to 128 ms u would get additional 256 samples delay with one plugin (every additional plugin adds another 256 ms)

Post

So I take it that with these cards you do yer tracking first, and then when that is finished, you put the plugs in line and do yer mixing?

All data traffic to and from these cards is via the PCI bus. Your soundcard's latency has bugger-all to do with that. There is no roundtrip through your soundcard.

And btw, 128 samples is not 128 milliseconds, unless your sampling rate is 1000Hz.

my mistake - i ment samples

Yep, that is how the UAD-1 plugins and DSP is designed to be used, during your mixing sessions.
That way, your PDC capable audio host app automatically compensates for the inherent delay associated with using DSP card plugins. Of course, you can use the plugins, with live input monitoring, but you would need to keep your project latency extremely low, probably 2.9 (128 samples) or less. I use the Nigel amp sim @ 5.8msec (256 samples) and the realtime response is no different than using my guitar with a Line 6 POD 2.

Interesting- I usually track at 6 ms or so, so this may be worth looking into. I cant get enough efx.

BTW is there any hit at all on your native cpu for these- I know the processing is farmed out, but does teh wrapping and routing of audio add to yer cpu load at all?

yes it does - here with my AMD 3500 its about 3 - 4 % with 8 reverbs

My modus operandi, when using the UAD-1 plugins, is to mix @ 23.2msec (1024 sample buffer) and allow my audio host's auto PDC to do it's thing. If I am tracking with UAD-1's, I'll bring the latency down to the 2.9msec(128 samples) to 5.8msec(256 samples) range.

There is normally a small native CPU hit associated with using the UAD-1 plugins. It differs from host to host, but generally you can expect a single digit CPU hit (anywhere from 2%-9%). I have had up to 25 UAD-1 plugins going, (2-UAD-1 cards), in one SONAR 4 project and the total added native CPU hit, on my puny PIII 1Ghz CPU, was 7%-9% and this was @ a 5.8msec project latency.
