Well, IMO you're making a mistake. Atleast go out and hear the new ones. It would only set you back around 100 or 200$ depending on where in the world you are located.

The new genelecs are MUCH EASIER to work with than the old ones. I struggled with my 1029 pair for over 2 years and had to constantly double check my mixes to get it decent but now it's so much easier. It's like a nasty unpredictable compressor has been removed from my monitoring chain. Also they are very nice to listen to any music on. They actually increased my enjoyment of listening to music in general.

You should know that the motto of Genelec is " we don't make a new design unless we can significantly improve the quality ". It took them 14 (!!) years to make the next model which is the 80xx series. So it's pretty safe to assume that there won't be a replacement model in another 10 years atleast. :)

Note, this is no rant. Just passionate advice. I dare you, ask anybody else who has tried both the 1029 and 8030 and see what they say. You have been warned.

no prob. it's a bad time for me now, but - no such prob for checkout there's a reseller 10km away from my home. regrding selling my curent ones - i've got them as part of a *special promo* thing here (-30%) - a studio owner here gave me his coupon - they're different color than catalogue model. basically they're sortof watermarked. doubt i'd get good price for them.

jmh:

mausoleum: what color are they? I've seen Black, blue, red and white ones sofar :D . Hi-fi shops used to sell them in all kinds of colors but now they've all switched to the new models.

Ok, back to topic. Sorry for the hijack.

*** NEW BUILD! **
build 43 (09/28/04)
http://www.chunkware.com/vanilla/

changes since last update:
- as requested, a sidechain input (L=input, R=key)
- wet/dry "Mix" control, for parallel compression junkies 8)
- updated RMS power summing algorithm; improved stereo image, more defined center
- SC filter freq now sweeps from 60Hz to 6kHz (just seemed more logical)
- better performance? possibly...

NOTE: the sidechain uses a left=input right=key approach, to retrofit the stereo input. in this mode, the plugin accepts a stereo input and outputs a mono signal accross the stereo output. you must properly setup your tracks in order for it to work properly. sorry it isn't perfect--but it will work for now.

as the parameter count climbs to 14, i find myself wondering, "when will it all end?" i have some more ideas for features, but i don't want to go overboard and destroy the simplicity. please weigh in on the following ideas:

- crunch mode, or perhaps a special "crunchy" release shape
- soft output clipper (or maybe a simple non-lookahead limiter)
- for GUI: VU meter or LED ladder?

lastly, thank you all for the referrals/offers to design the GUI. a designer has been hired, and development is underway. "maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow--but soon..."

enjoy the new build! and PLEASE give feedback.

actually, i was thinking of NO look-ahead at all, so as to avoid buffering and latency issues. it would basically just be a dynamic soft-clip waveshaper. and of course, you would be able to switch it off.

I haven't tried the very latest beta yet, so this may well be fixed. but...

I was getting some denormal type problems happening with build 36. It does the same thing that JCM900's B channel does on my computer, when the audio feeding it ends, it jumps up the cpu usage to nearly 50%. This is on a 2.4ghz p4. I saved a preset file with the settings that do this, so I'll test it on the new build and then see if I can narrow down what settings are causing it to happen.

Has anybody else noticed this?

i figured something like this would happen. it isn't completely denormal-safe yet. sorry about this. i'll try to get around to this soon. :(

np, beta is beta ;)

btw, I really am enjoying this compressor used 2x in my bands new song (if you can call us that ;))

Also, I don't know if there's any truth that some p4's denormal easier than others, but if so, mine's got be one of the worst :P

Chunk:

I'm digging Vanilla (b69) more & more every time I use it. Reminds me of the Orban 424a (one of my all time favorites in the analog domain)

Any new info on a GUI or a release date?
