Looking for a Bass Guitar Amp Sim plug - free of course

I'm often adding Logics overdrive to my basses. Rather low drive setting, around medium on the tone control. Adds a bit of compression (which is what every overdrive will do) without pumping artefacts or so. And while there might be lots of overdrive plugins doing the job fine, I allways found the internal Logic one to be rather decent for such tasks.

Huh, are they really? Maybe if you think about free alternatives, although I would try cortex, which has a lot of tweaking options for the speaker models – I’m sure you’ll find some good stuff there for bass.Barf wrote:Bass pre-amps are definetly a gap in the market, Ive posted a similar question some time ago. The Ampeg VST plug seems like a good option but no one knows when it ever is gonna be released and it certainly wont be free.
But when it comes to commercial programs: Revalver has dedicated bass speaker sims (15”, 18”), and your can make yourself a nice bass amp using the different modules. Ditto Izotope trash; there are excellent sounds there for bass and a lot of good presets, and on the izotope website you can find the “Trash receipes for bass” manual to help you make your own models.
Hell, even amplitube has presets for bass. There’s no specific bass speaker sims, but to quote from the izotope trash (!!!) bass receipes (about a 12” bass speaker model):”…Since moving a lot of volume isn’t necessary, it turns out that small speaker models can actually provide a very full bass tone, as long as they don’t have to make it very loud. And of course, as this is just software, you don’t have to make it loud at all.”
Food for thought….
Cheers

Think about it... most real bass amps are supposed to deliver a more or less full frequency range, so speaker emulations aren't even halfway as important as for guitars (the usual 12" speakers have a drastic high cut at around 5-6 kHz).
In addition, MANY studio recordings are done with a D.I.-ed bass, even pretty much rockbased things.
I'd rather look for some good compressor and/or a mellow, yet somewhat pressing overdrive. The little bit of speaker sound you may want from a bass amp could probably be emulated rather sufficiently by using an EQ.

You might wanna check out the Behringer V-Tone Bass BDI21 DI box. Looks to be a cheap copy of the Tech 21 sansamp bass driver.
Unless you really have to use software.

I got one of their GDI21 guitar versions a few weeks ago. Lucky I only bought it as a DI to sort out the impedence, the amp models are not as good as the free software ones IMO. Still a cheap DI though, and handy as an overdrive ... If the bass one's anything like that I reckon you'd be better off spending yer cash on a bass eq pedal.
And I agree about Revalver, with a bit of experimenation you can get some nice bass noise out of it. I drop my input level then go preamp9 with lots of drive then comp then power amp4 then 2x12" speakersim. Nice.
I find that whatever I use I get a better bass sound if I record at 44.1 rather than 96. Does anyone else find this?

I have a Tech 21 TriOD for guitar, the GDI21 seems based on the Tech21 GT-2. I like the sound of my TriOD. It's not the best cabinet sound, but the distortion has a nice overall sound. Complex and hifi. I've used the TriOD on the fender channel, to give a bit of warmth/distortion on bass, and it does sound quite good. The revalver 15" speaker sim afterwards gave a nice frequency response.

Sorry about the funky link; for some reason he's not listed here on KVR, which is where I discovered it...?
Oh, I should mention: for Bass, I find it helps to turn off the "LO" switch if you want a big bottom-end.

Interesting to see some positive opinions about the GDI. I just got a new guitar so maybe it's time to give it another try and experiment with some different speaker sims. My main complaint about it was the lack of middle ground between completely clean and overdriven to hell.

I did some more tooling around with the GDI and got a bit of improvement by feeding it less volume and reducing the output level then boosting with a Boss EQ. I still think Uli stole my money.
But then what would I know, I'm a bass player who only recently turned to The Darkside and got into the six string business. Maybe someone should start a GDI thread. I'd do it but who'd wanna read "How To Get A Guitar Sound That Somewhat Sucks" ...
And Bduffy, that X-Amp is a vey nice little gizmo. Where's that been hiding? Some nice guitar effects by those folks as well.
