Hey y'all:
I just finished a cool harmonica session I have outtakes from. I sliced up 10 .wav files from some hard-blowing solos, saved them as Acid files and put them in a 12 Mb zip on my website. These files are bone dry - no EQ, no compression, no effects, so feel free to dress them up and take them to town. The song they were recorded for is in the key of "C" and clocked in at about 150 bpm. The solos will fit well into uptempo country, rock, pop and, with some processing, would absolutely smoke in house, techno and drums'n'bass songs.
You are free to use them as you wish, but cannot include them in any compilation without my express permission. Violators will be tied up and dragged behind my horse. Here is the URL:

Best regards from Austin, Texas

Hi Tio Ed, that poor horse of you, allways working as a mule. But of course with these oil prices, no more feathers and tar !
Tx for blowing in this direction !

The riffs are very good, you´re a great harpplayer. I noticed there are not very much harmonicasamples on the web (I mean single hits/notes). I personaly love the Bear´s (Canned Heat) overdriven sound. Do you do that kinda stuff too ? With the crazy egg-chaped mike (cut-off above 5 kHz). Thanks again. Also greeting to your horse (want to keep it as a friend, ye know) !

Thank you for the kind words. There aren't many harp samples because it's an easy instrument to play but a *very* hard instrument to play well. I can produce so many different sounds using combinations of tongue, lips, mouth, chest cavity, sinus cavity and throat plus all the techniques like growls, slurs, tongue slaps, various vibratos, head shakes and hand wahs that it's simply impossible to do a complete library of single sounds and notes - it would be too large to effectively use.poepe wrote:The riffs are very good, you´re a great harpplayer. Yes, I also play hard blues styles with a lot of overdrive distortion, grit and glory (or "fatback" as I like to call it) as well as chromatic harmonica like Stevie Wonder. The harmonica is the most human of musical instruments next to the human voice, and adds a lot of texture and character to any type of music if played well. I suppose the only reason it isn't used more frequently in modern music is that most people who haven't heard Larry Adler, Little Walter or Toots Thielmanns just don't know what good harmonica playing sounds like.
If there is any interest out there, I will be glad to save some more outtakes from my session work here in Austin for posting on this forum.
Best regards from me AND my horse,
Tio Ed

When it comes to talk about harmonica, Ed, you sound like a poet ! I love the harp, did a little blowing myself, but I guess I just got to the "easy"-to-play-instrument level (although I still have a nice growl and slur). Blowing instruments is not mine, so I stick to guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. Tio Ed, you should be surprised what you can do with a few one-shot samples; one doesn´t use every trick one knows in 1 song ! I was just working on a song with some harp on it. Just made of 1 sample from the harmonica of "the Bear"; I could find only 1 useble note, without other sounds, on all of their songs I have. Is there a way to send it to you, so you can hear it ? So I would say that any nice harp sample is welcome. I´ll try (later tonight, because I have a DIY house to finish) to get some nice little virtual harminca out of your samples. Take care.
P.S. One Man, ok, but One Harmonica, maybe your wife, but I don´t believe that !

Poepe:
E-mail me the harp sample - I LOVE the harp player you borrowed from. Those old Canned Heat records were a major influence on me wanting to spend my life playing blues and harmonica. My e-mail is info AT texasmusicforge DOT com.
I'd love to chat about the DIY house project, too, off list. If you'll look on my website (texasmusicforge DOT com) you'll find a layout on the DIY house I'm building and getting ready to move into later next month.
As to one man, one harmonica: I like to start shows sometimes by strolling out onstage without saying a word and holding up one harmonica for the audience to see, then taking harp and mic into the crowd and showing them just how much of a musical storm I can blow up from just the one little instrument. Fortunately, my long-suffering wife doesn't mind sharing me with my harmonicas or my horse...

A quick note for harmonica fans: I have a hot harp instrumental called "Grease and Glory" up on my website that manages to quote Gershwin and Tchaikovsky while maintaining a smokin' R&B rhythm track. It's a small Mp3 download at:
