Hm, i know an engineer who exchanged the bbe through spl vitalizers in the mid of the 90's.I don't know anybody that has a studio who doesn't have a BBE somewhere in there.
In my view it sounds sometimes artificial if pushing hi treble to higher rates. I use it carefully because of this fact. It depends on what signal do you wish to process, no doubt.
On a high compressed summing-mix turning "low"-knob a little bit can bring the final punch but at the same time i usually notch undesired frequencies which were boosted.

To the thread-opener: No, it's not an usual maximizer, because there's no compressing and limiting in there, only enhancing low's (not subbasses!) and high's.
