Upgrading Sonitus:FX Plugins

I love the Sonitus suite that comes bundled with Sonar 4 Producer Edition. Unfortunately they are only DX compatible. On the CW website they sell the complete Sonitus suite which includes VST compatible versions of the plugs. I emailed cake to see if there was a discount for registered users, and they blithely advised me to purchase the suite at full price (they even sent a handy link to the purchase page). As if!
No discount for registered users? Does anyone else think that stinks? Cakewalk really needs to re-think this. Why should I have to pay full price for something I already own (the DXi plugs) just to get the VSTs? Take a look at most other software developers, they generally give you a break on one platform if you have a license for another. Or maybe Cakewalk is just trying to take revenge on me for switching to Ableton Live! Those bastards.

I bought the Sonitus pack when they were still Ultrafunk. Cakewalk bought them out, which was smart because they are still fantastic plugs. But that sucks! Screw them! You can do better now with freeware. Glaceverb rocks. The kjaerhus and voxengo freebies give you most of what you need. If you want to spend money, go straight to the top and get ArtsAcoustic reverb, and the kjaerhus and voxengo commercial stuff. Maybe PSP. Screw Cakewalk.

honestly the Sonitus Reverb sounds way better then GlaceVerb and ArtsAcoustic to my ears....
but I'd agree on the screw cakewalk thing....
I wanted to buy a single plug out of the bundle which is okay in the US but since I'm from Germany and HAVE to buy at EDIROL they wouldn't offer single plugs

Don't be so fast to screw Cakewalk. They crossgraded my Sonar DX Sonitus plugs to VST about a month ago.
I think you got some wrong info. Try to talk to Bill Jackson in Customer Service. I have dealt with him several times and he seems pretty cool. I didn't ask him directly, just used the website form, but he ended up contacting me. I told him I had heard they just don't want to crossgrade people (I read this on the Sonar forum when I used to hang out there) and he seemed surprised to hear that. Sounded to me like it's only an issue to them if you were a pre-exisiting Ultrafunk customer.
I'm not going to post the crossgrade amount because they don't list it so I don't really feel it's my place to post it, but it wasn't much. They even held on to the disc and threw it in with my P5v2 upgrade order - so that tells you how long ago it was.
edit: if for some reason you get no joy, you can get Art Teknika Console and use the DX versions within there.

Interesting. I guess it depends on who you talk to. When I used the online form they didn't mention any type of crossgrade. However when I called the sales line the rep immediately set up the deal for me. Thanks for the advice, Mike, I was just about to give up!

The first guy I talked to at Cakewalk about this wanted some ridiculous amount ($299 maybe?). I knew of someone else who had gotten the VSTs for free (as was said, after all, you already own the "essence" of the product...) and I brought that up. Vociferously. After conferring with his superiors, he came back and offered them to me for $49. Out of principle, tempered by the fact that originally they wanted more than I had paid for Sonar Producer just to get what I already owned, I said, "thanks, but no thanks." Now, if I'm in a VST only program and need to use the noisegate -- the one absolutely first class, indispensible Sonitus plugin -- I do it in a DX host and import it.

AFAIk most other programs (at least all that I own - adobe, ulead, pinnacle, PG, etc) include their bundled effects as OEM versions and you are not able to use them in other software. So, by the sound of this, Cakewalk would be very generous to offer you a cheap crossgrade price.

Yup, Cakewalk were indeed generous to offer the crossgrade. $49 is not unreasonable. However they do have some restrictions, notably the Lexicon Pantheon. But as KL mentioned, you can always process in a DX compatible host. That thing eats CPU anyway.
I can understand why Cake isn't going out of their way to publicize the fact that an inexpensive crossgrade to the full version of Sonitus:FX exists. All of their products support DX plugs. Why would they want to encourage users to use another host? I have to admit I wanted these because I missed the heck out of them after jumping ship to Ableton Live. $49 is worth it for the multiband alone. It was like a phantom limb, I kept reaching for the Sonitus and they weren't there! Kind of mental.

Even if other companies do it, the idea of limiting the use of something purchased strikes me as unethical.
But then so does much of what is common practice in business and government. In fact, most of what the current US administration does...
I must be wrong.
(Or at least sadly misguided and out of step.)

Hey willum,
Saw your post at Cakewalk and now here. Why the switch to Live?
On a separate note, forget about the Pantheon. Some may like it but IMHO it's gotta be the least useful reverb I have ever heard. I really have tried to make it sound good. Use Glaceverb or something.
