why would ableton release live 5 when they're still working on patches for live 4. hence, the recent 4.1.4 update?
i dont understand that. aren't you supposed to release a new version of a product when things got ironed out and nobody complains about bugs anymore?
correct me if im wrong.

I think that actually shows good commitment. They could have just jumped to version 5 without fixing anything on version 4 and made everybody upgrade. And also maybe those things fixed with version 4 needed to be fixed before adding new features to 5 so they got done first.digitalmessiah wrote:why would ableton release live 5 when they're still working on patches for live 4. hence, the recent 4.1.4 update?![]()

I think that Live really is the most fluid of the sequencers. For example, the internal routing is great. But, if I was to make a few suggestions they would be:
1 Allow dragging of audio files off the desktop or from folder.
2 Support rendering (boucing) every track as single wav stems.
3 Allow the "file list" to become a floating window. 4 This is really handy if you have dual displays. The current one is pretty contstrained.
4 Add Multi-Processor support
5 Fix the draw tool in the midi editor. Right click etc.
6 Add the ability to select inputs in the arrange view
7 Add support for auto crossfading
8 Add Beziers for automation
9 Allow midi automation settings to be saved in a manner similar to VST banks.
10 Support "offline" effects. Well Freeze will certainly help.

These guys hit it out of the park!
All that was needed to complete the package for me was..
FX groups
Freeze
Arp
Looks like they came through, and all powererd by a stable german engineered engine!
If your CPU can't handle it ...time to upgrade! I think Crapwalk really tried to steal their thunder, but test the sequencer engines head to head youll see it's like a BMW and Ford...

I recently had to make a choice between LP7 and Live - I chose LP7 for a few reasons (included softsynths, great midi editing etc.) but the main reason why I went with LP7 was that I often write music that often involves frequent time signature or tempo changes. When I e-mailed ableton to ask if this was possible in Live, they replied saying that this feature would be implemented in the near future. That was a few months ago. So, just out of curiosity, can you change meter/time signature or tempo in the middle of session?

I think that one of the cooler updates that is apparently going under the radar is:
Also check out:
And something I've wanted forever:
This upgrade is truly stunning. Live5, select VST's, and Reason3. Don't need much else. Can't wait for the beta
This could be an improved timestretch that could allow more realistic changes to vocals and acoustic instruments. I can't wait to play with this.ableton wrote:
New "Complex" Warp Mode
Now that Live works with your entire music collection, there is a dedicated Warp Mode to accommodate all types of music. Live 5 introduces "Complex," a new real-time Warp Mode to complement Beats, Tones, Texture and Re-Pitch. Complex is a frequency-domain warping method specifically designed to accommodate composite signals such as mixed-down music.
Also check out:
The fact that you can instantly warp mark an entire track could make for some awesome on the fly work with whatever you have in your bag of tricks. It was pretty painful to have to warp mark everything manually. This is a massive addition!ableton wrote:
MP3 and Automatic Tempo-Matching
Live 5 guarantees instant remix and mash-up gratification. Not only is your music library in MP3 format immediately accessible to Live, but the music also automatically synchronizes to the project tempo. State-of-the-art signal processing automatically tracks the tempo of imported songs and sets Warp Markers for you. This works well not only for electronic music but also for songs with human tempo variations.
And something I've wanted forever:
You can do some absolute crazy stuff with the loop position and a mouse, but now I can assign that to a controller and automate it!!!! That is freakin huge!ableton wrote:
New Clip Transport
Navigation within Live's Clip View has become much easier. Just click anywhere in the waveform to jump there - in sync and subject to real-time quantization.
In Live 5, the clip start and end points ("In" and "Out") are now decoupled from the loop. You can prepare a clip to run into a loop or use the new "Set" buttons to catch a certain part of the music in a loop as it plays. The Set buttons, the loop switch, the loop position and other Clip View controls can now be mapped to MIDI controllers to allow for mouse-free loop tweaking using your preferred controller.
This upgrade is truly stunning. Live5, select VST's, and Reason3. Don't need much else. Can't wait for the beta

But now Ableton is fighting back quickly by making a public announcement about the upcoming Live 5.
It's a rivalry between 2 companies that are creating an "all-in-one" host to end all others hosts in general.
Steinberg, Apple, Image-Line, MOTU, Propellerhead, Mackie, and (maybe?) Synapse Audio are watching this carefully. Count on it.

Yes but have you driven a Ford lately?Cosmic Bandito wrote:If your CPU can't handle it ...time to upgrade! I think Crapwalk really tried to steal their thunder, but test the sequencer engines head to head youll see it's like a BMW and Ford...
P5 version 2 is like a rock and with full PDC.
Remember, everyone who added PDC added gapping...cubase, nuendo, sonar, etc.
This is new territory for disableton, just like midi was in version 4... and we all know how substandard that was.
We'll see how the beta shapes up...I suspect with all the attention that project 5 2 is getting that ableton is rushing this release so they wouldn't lose too many sales...I would wait for the inevitible 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 before getting my feet too wet
I'm glad the c major scale was invented before copyright law
