I use FL Studio. why? simply because it allows me to do anything I want to do. maybe in the future if i need something for my music that FL won't allow me to do, then maybe I'll change, but right now FL's perfect for me.

(Okay, I have made decisions based on less-sensible criteria... but knew what I was about.)

Actually, I have to say that I've been quite impressed with a lot of the stuff done in FLS by friends of mine. SOme people really manage to get a really nice sound out of fls

it's a prerequisite, yes, that it should let you do everything you want/need to do - but it's not really a good criterion for choosing among them. It's much more about HOW you do it! Whether it's comfortable or not

I had a few friends that were all about Buzz a few years back. I knew a guy who scored a whole relatively large Canadian indie film in Buzz. I knew another guy who released a bunch of hhc records in Europe and all he really used was Buzz and cubase as well. + There's a kinda prominent Canadian indie band (who will remain nameless for now) who did a lot of the electronics on their cd in buzz (I'll give you a hint, they played Toronto a few weeks back - they hit the stage just after Billy Talent, - hint #2, their CD was produced by the same producers who did the Brazilian Girls album and David Bowie's last couple albums, hehe)r2101 wrote:buzz (odd but nice)

anyways, in almost every one of the situations above, I remember people exporting all of the waves from buzz and then mixing and mastering the tracks in protools (HD TDM) in a downtown studio. However, lining up tracks exported from buzz can sometimes be hell (because for some reason, buzz puts a bit of space at the beginning of every track it exports).

Ableton Live: I sketchpad a song to write lyrics to after coming up with a few bars each for the main, break, bridge, and chorus.
Tracktion 2: I usually record and finish in here, since my ancient computer cant handle it in Live... Plus it has a 64bit summing bus....lol....jus jokes relax
Energy XT: I use this for midi routing in sketchpad phase since Live cant, or for arpeggiator in either.
Audition: I use as my audio editor. If it added midi, and could record automation instead of having to draw envelopes, this might be an all in one solution.....it boots up fast, runs fast, seems extremely stable, and has a lot of complexity and features some folk may not realize.
If Live can get its load down or implement freeze well, and add the midi routing, it could be singular solution....I'd love to be able to K.I.S.S. it...whatever the app
As far as all the midi editing issues, I personally dont get it....I guess if i had started out on one of the big boys I might miss all the detailed midi editing functions.....in Live i jus play along,...it stops loops back,...if i dont like it i play it again til i do....i dont want to draw individual notes in a step sequencer, or infinitely adjust velocity, note length, or a zillion other parameters....whatever the instrument or especially percussion,...drawing midi to me is not musical at all....its programming,...its like being at work....i understand it can be especially helpful with flams and rolls and intricate riffs,...but a decent midi controller has velocity, aftertouch,pitch, and mod wheels....plenty of room to "play in" the expressivity, instead of trying to draw it in after the fact...and i dont want my music to sound perfect....the limitations of my playing ability are happy accidents and a part of my individual musicality...maybe if you cant play it in, it shouldn't be there?.....the irony is people would rather draw it in and then want all types of swing and groove quantizing features to try and add some humanity....i dunno seems stange and backward to me....isn't music all about a feel expressed through ur hands....maybe is jus me,...but it makes me wonder when so many people think live's midi editor is SO inept.....a subjective thing true.

To me that's part of "allowing me to do it." :-) If it's uncomfortable I just won't bother. I'm currently using Cubase SL 2.2. I'll wait for 4.0 to upgrade since I'm still learning 2.2.
I'd also like to try Ableton Live some day since I've heard so much about it around here.

Wouldn't it be nice to have one app to do it all in thought? My favorite recipe would be: Two cup of Vegas, a cup of Tracktion, two tablespoon of EXT, a teaspoon of Live and some Cubase midi functionality sprinkled on top.
