is that the thing to say on a bright, Hawaiian Christmas morn?
Hm, that would be "Mele Kalikimaka!" if memory serves. (That one's simple enough I shouldn't have to look it up... I hope... :-D)

I bet you can see a same kind of group of 20 year old guys with Iron Maiden t-shirts. It's the best music ever.

Or a bunch of 50 year old all smoking cigars and sipping whisky whilst listening to dixieland at the jazz club. It's the best music ever.

Or shopping golfgear and listening to Celine Dion. Cause she's the greatest singer af all time.

And I'm not trying to be better than anyone here. I do it too, everybody does, unless you are emotionally dead.
Wait a minute. Don't be so fast to speak for everyone...

I don't sit around thinking that my favorite music is the best music ever. I happen to realize that it's merely music I happen to like a lot. I don't have any pretense in my head that because I like something, it is inherently and intrinsically better than what someone else likes.

Now, my dad and my brother, they are guility of doing that. :)

They experience everything through the eyes and ears of a blugrass and traditional country music fan. They are constantly confusing the subjective aspects with the objective aspects, and declaring not only an artist's entire life's work to be crap, but entire genres of music are total crap in their minds. :)

I do my best to focus on the objective, and remain aware of those aspects which are highly subjective. I don't listen to music I love and think it's the best music ever. -- It's simply music I love, and that's plenty good enough for me. :)

take care,

Yes, one of my best friends actually used to call me "Spock", why do you ask?

I think you can thank us Australians for inventing the sampler! That did wonders for original sounding music :)

McLilith: Absolutely yes to all of it.

Except that bluegrass really is the topmost bestest genre of all.

Well-said. The way I understand it, J.S. Bach is a perfect example of this. The baroque style was in its dying days. He didn't care, and many think he's the greatest composer ever.

Yep. As you can tell by what music did after he died in 1750: Mozart was born in 1756, and "papa Haydn" was well under way in his carreer by then. Neither of them wrote remotely like Bach. Even JSB's sons quickly found new directions.

Well, I do have to admit that one of their shows was the only time I've literally been frightened by what I saw.s

But I also had several brief personal dealings with those guys, and one very bizarre experience with their manager, none of which brought them any closer to earth for me, or made me any less afraid...

Wow, that's been a long time now.

All music is pretty standard, when you think about it.
