i have a bass loop sample that i'm tryin to determine the key of....but it's not coming out so great...i am using Kontakt2...and i'm tryin to use the reference tone but mebbe i just don't have good enough pitch or something...but aren't keys based on like the frequency of the sound...and it seems to me that a program could therefore determine the key of a sample based on it's frequency....so i'm wondering if there is a program that does this...where i can just run a sample through it and it tells me the key?

Try to isolate & select one note only (preferrably the dominant "root") instead of the whole loop sample. Maybe then Kontakt can determine the freq and key. Otherwise another editor like CoolEditPro (and a dozen others) can do it for sure.

Awave studio will find the root key near instant, same with adobe audition.

Spe3D do you know if either of those apps will change the key of the sample also?

i tried using awave but it just tells me that every sample has a root key of C4....the manual seems to say that i can override it...can you tell me the way to get it to determine the key of a sample

If it's a free-domain loop then you can post it here and someone can tell ya ;)
Anti-aliasing is for "synthmonk%ys".

the loops i'm currently tryin to figure out aren't free domain...they are $$ samples....most of my free ones have the key listed in the title...i kinda figured out how to get awave to do it...but it costs 130$...the demo only lasts 30 days...is there a free way to do it as well? or can one of the programs i own do it...cubase sx 3/recycle/komplete2withKK?

Abobe will change the midi key, and keep that info in the file - not sure about awave - however the root key in adobe is written to a seperate file and awave cannot save files above 16 bit.

Select the wave in the right hand window - then right click and select process audio - then select auto tune, leave as default setting and the key will be changed for you, then if its 16 bit or less save the selected wave form - or just remeber the root note to use in your other apps.

i can get awave to solve the problem for me now...but the program only lasts 30 days.....and it's quite expensive since i only want to use just one small feature of this suite....are there any spectrum analyzers out there that can just tell me the note or key? like free or cheaper ones? I can find a ton of free FFT programs that give me a numerical value...

Humm the base root note (play it in loop) and find the identically pitched one on your keyboard. There's only twelve of 'em, so it can't be that tough!

Not sure how useful it is , but there is the freeware AutoTune at http://www.analogx.com/contents/downloa ... totune.htm

This takes in samples and reoutputs them at any key you want . It was very useful to myself , I tuned about 500 samples with it , just draged them into the window and let it do it's thing

Cheers
