A great theory. But only time will tell. 8)
i thought thats was what live 4 was meant to do already ???

slainte  rob
Somethings were missing in Live 4 (like Freeze!). :D :hihi:

Don't sweat it pHz. Ableton will change the game of music production. I'm convince of this! 8)

True enough. PD + Psycle (open-source?) + Csound + SoundCollider would get you pretty far. Certain minor luxuries like support tend to be hit&miss in open source, mind, but your point is fair.

Though $100 dollars over 4+ years doesn't seem like a rip-off to me. $600 in 2 years, does a bit.

You're right, and actually if you bought Live 1 in 200, you would have spent more than $800 by now.

I am frugal, but to me it's still worth it.

A host that clicks with you is even more important than a good synth IMHO...

Except back in the year 200 your original price would have been in Roman talents, or Greek drachmas, or Persian... erm, cats? =^_^=

How many cats do you need to spend before you feel ripped off?

This is true.

I'd like the list you said you could put together because not only am I loving live but i'm interested in other apps as well and if your list comes out like you said I'll probably pick up a few things on it so please post up.

regarding Live, $600. over two years is not excessive when the software is worth $850 anyway, Now those other apps that are un-inspiring and cost upward of 6- 1200 bucks and they know who they are, I would def not pay for them.

Hey, and nobody forces you to upgrade... Live 4 is a good program a it is for a good price. You can make great music with it... It's your own choice to give in to the temptation of upgrading every time a new version arrives... But a BIG temptation it is ..... Yes I too am version hungry. Aren't we all.. I think I would make better, but definately MORE songs if I unplugged internet for a year or so. :-)

Maybe it's par for the course when a company decides to classify their application as a "DAW", but still, you guys are too easy. Mulch and EnergyXT and a whackload of quality freeware (if you don't know which ones, Id' be happy to give you a list) would give you a near complete feature match, and then some, and it would set you back $100.
Yeah, but IMO neither Mulch or EnergyXT is as easy to work in or as solid as Live. For me, the workflow in Live is second to none. It is so freakin easy to come up with what is in my head. That UI and workflow design comes at a price.

There is no way I could do in Mulch or eXT what I can do in Live. Not saying that they aren't capable just that I couldn't do it as quickly as I could in Live if ever.

Honestly, I think that you guys complaining about the upgrade costs is in very poor taste.

I am assuming that you did not get the memo (ie, the email from ableton for those of us that are subscribed).

They said that due to the success of LIVE4, they were able to add programmers and thus get such a great program to us ASAP. If you stop to realize that they really only have the one product, and that it, evidently, costs money to develop software....well, you do the math.

Plus, it takes time to develop stuff. Would you rather still be working with LIVE3, waiting 2 years for LIVE5 just to save $120? Not me, I would rather have the functionality for a year and then upgrade. It isn't as if they have all the code written already and are saying......hmmmm, what should we put in this time so that we can release something and make money off of those poor suckers....

By the way, a lot of the development is done by people who actually use this to make their music....so, yeah, they aren't putting functionality in that they would want so they can't use it and bilk us out of money..

Jeez, and the power of LIVE5 with all the other vstis around is like having a $20,000 studio on your laptop (just a guess on the figure)......what a bunch of whiners.

Post

damn, i'm 4 days off from paying the small upgrade cost, d'oh! oh well, it'll be worth paying for

Don't you feel a little bit ripped off by this kind of business practice?

Agree, feel ripped, a little, but have way to much fun to really notice.... :hihi:

Joking aside, this is way too expansive but I tried cheaper solutions like some you mentioned - but were not happy with them. Much more happy with Live. Suits my workflow really well, I create faster in it.

But I will use those complementary apps for creation too. And if they work good for you, you just saved a lot of money. They did not for me...

The Ford GT40 is cool but the Mustang is still a piece of shit.
