Send me the loop and I'll tell you what key it is in.

I love my perfect pitch. :P

No problem , glad it's what you want . I went through looking up programs to changing the key of samples and after a night or so experimenting found this. Thanks to the people of AnalogueX for making avaiable as freeware :)

Cheers

go to edit (or maybe view?) > sample info and then click find using analysis.

Keep in mind that the key of a sample isn't necessarily an objective thing. For many, especially simple ones, it's obvious. For many, assuming you use it "in-genre", it's fairly obvious. For "obvious" cases, a program should be able to do the job.

But some samples can be played in different enharmonic keys for interesting effects, especially when playing out-of-genre. (Similarly, a loop can be played offset in time, so that "1" doesn't fall where the sample creator intended it.)

For a simple example, something written in A minor might be interpreted as being in C major -- all the same notes, and if the bass isn't pounding on the root, it could be either. Take your pick, or better yet, map it both ways and have some fun!

Post

... and that MIGHT be the reason why your sample has no root key assigned to it, while its sibblings from the same CD do!

Personally I couldn't care less about a root key, since the sampler will put it in any other key I might like.

ya..but although i write music...i have trouble telling the difference between like sharps and flats...basically i know which keys on my piano are in C or B or whatever..but i just want to make sure when i spread my samples across the keyboard...i just want the samples assigned to the right keys

A ton of 'calculators' here http://www.martindalecenter.com/Calcula ... l#MUSIC-DJ for audio, BPM etc..

Another cheap and easy way to calculate pitch is a simple chromatic tuner, about 20 bucks from any guitar shop.

Post

Oh, I though you were talking about musical snippet samples, rather than musical instument single-note samples to map to the keyboard to play the virtual instrument. That is, I was thinking of things like loops, not things like typical soundfont samples.

The same kind of applies -- some instruments have complex overtones that make determining the pitch difficult -- like tubular bells, carallon, and balaphon.

Post

actually i am talkin about a loop...but say i have a 2 seconds synth loop...that includes a progression....it can be in any key...so if the loop is in E but my song is in D ....i need to transpose the loop a full key....if i know the key of my song and the key of my loop...then i know how many "cents" to transpose my loop...and the easiest way to do this is to put the loop into my sample manager in kontakt2....spread it across the keyboard...and tell kontakt2 the correct native key....thus i can play the loop on my keyboard just like anything else

wrong. There are 100 "cents" going from a white key to the next black. I think you're talking 'bout "half" notes, dunno the proper term but it ain't cents 4 sure!

Download the demo of melodyne. Choose "add melody", select your sample, hit "detect melody", double click on the resulting waveform and voila..........

Post

well i wasn't sure about "cents" either...i went out on a limb...but technically i was right!!! it's just a LOT of 'em :D ehehe....thanks tho...i'll check out melodyne next....so far awave has been the best solution....albeit most expensive...

Just post the clip, or MP3 it and email it to me via the address on my website (in my sig). I'm cheaper than Melodyne (though probably not faster, and certainly not as pretty!)
