I've been using the ones on the E-MU 1820's built in preamp for a while now, but I'm looking into investing on a proper mic preamp mainly for vocal use. Are there any suggestions ? (mics i use are all low-end stuff, i.e. Behringer B-2 Pro, SM57/58), not exactly the best mics in the world but I think it could benefit from a nicer preamp?

How does the Behringer Ultravoice VX2496 look? At that price it looks tempting. Or will it be worse than the TF-Pro pre with DIGITAL gain on my 1820?
Also considering is Focusrite Trackmaster pro?

Can anyone give me some light on this? Budget is around 200 pounds..MAX

A vocal channel? Drawmer M60 is not too bad in that price range. Not as nice as a 1969, but much better than the E-Moo. Or you could get a single channel Neve-clone for that price. In kit form. You like the smell of solder?

Best thing is to try a few and find what works for you. If only those hardware guys would get with the 21st century and offer downloadable demos. :D

ya...no demos whatsoever, all you're gonna get is people's word.

The M60 looks nice, but it's 320 pounds ..just about 1.5 times my max budget.

Would be able to do the Neve-Clone myself, if proper schematics (not too complex ..:D) and if it comes with a case i could put the board in . where could I get them in the UK do you know?

The FMR RNP is great value for money, better quality than anything else you'll find for anywhere close to the same price, and at the current weak dollar exchange rate, it comes to 275 GBP for two channels of pre. A bit beyond your budget, I know, but close enough that I thought you ought to be aware of it. It also doubles as a direct box for instruments. FMR is a tiny husband-and-wife operation in Texas, but Mark's a very good engineer and you're paying 100% for the product, not for marketing hype, etc. See http://www.fmraudio.com/RNP8380.htm
Google on "FMR RNP" for reviews.

Edit: Note that the way to get the best deal is to order direct from FMR in the US. They've got UK and European resellers, but their mark-ups are excessive. Even paying freight and VAT, I got a better deal ordering direct from FMR than via their French or UK resellers. But if you end up being interested, get your own quotes and do your own math...

FMR RNP is great, if you can get a good price in the UK.
If you want to consider some DIY, visit:http://www.seventhcirclestudios.com/SCA/SCA.htm
You can buy just a raw board (from the US) and populate it yourself.

I use PreSonus preamps here and get great results..overall great sound from this manufacturer for a decent price.

Nobody mentioned Focusrite here?

The fmr does look promising. But I want more from a single unit. hmm.....VoiceMaster Pro anyone?

I think I'll consider the M60 or the VoiceMaster Pro since they're both at around 300 pounds.

Gotta save up for it though.
