I find it hard sometimes to display a reasonable level of quality control. I work on the 80/20 rule - 80% of my tunes are crap and the other 20% don't get posted in the cafe.

Do you ever find yourself listening to the same half finished 32 bar loop for days on end not knowing where to go with it? I do, although if it carries on for too long I just delete the f**king thing and start over.

mine go to 64 but the bpm is quite low

leave it and go back to it later
the more you listen to it the more it will sound 'ordinary' to you and you'd dismiss songs too easily

that's probably accurate. I rarely have more than two projects on the go at once so I do listen to them waaaay too much.

Like spaceman said... you really need a fresh ear when listening, little problems and opportunities will be in your face then.

take 2 of yer loops and splice them together. Especially if they are defferent tempos/time sigs/keys. That will facilitate some creativity to make them fit...

after a while it sounds 'common' and you think 'what the f**k's special about this?'

and when you have little time that leaves you with 500 unfinished song parts of around 64 - 128 bars

Man, I am with Spaceman. I have a bunch of stuff that sits around that is probably 50-60% finished. Like 20 tracks, and they are really all over the place, no one defined style. Am waiting for LIVE5 with the freeze function because I end up running out of CPU and start bouncing tracks, but get annoyed because I want to change small things, go back, repeat.....argh.

It's actually easy to get ideas down, but finishing? That is the tricky part.

Post

yeah I know what you're saying. I usually end up with each track comprising of 3 or more 'projects' so I've got the chance to change stuff after I've bounced it.
