Dear Cubase SX/SL 3 owner,

On the 28th May 2005 at the 118th AES Convention, Steinberg announced that it will be issuing a free update for all Nuendo 3 users to Nuendo 3.1 this summer. Accordingly, we’re also very pleased to announce an update for all Cubase SX/SL 3 users free of charge to Cubase SX/SL 3.1, which will be available as a download from our website. We plan to release this exciting update in August 2005.

As well as numerous smaller enhancements, Cubase SX/SL 3 will offer workflow improvements on existing functionality as well as an array of new features tailored to music creation and production. With a total of more than 60 new features and enhancements, Cubase SX 3.1 will include Studio Connections Audio Integration, further expanded hardware integration, support for Dolby Digital and DTS encoders and improvements on editing and mixing. Please watch this space for more information...

Kind regards,
Your Steinberg team

Thanks for the heads-up on that.

I don't frequent them parts much, but also did the little USB thingie so they don't delete me.

I still can't figure out why a patch to a program requires a media release. Fix the god damned bugs and release the patch. This makes me think that the bugs are ignored in favor of more industry buzzword features that are implemented so half assed that they aren't usable.

they just release a 3.0.x patch without any media release...i think the 3.1 release is including a bunch of new features...thats the point...u gotta realize by now that it's Logic v Cubase ....so they do some political posturing with press releases and stuff..whatever..i am just ready for the update

60 new features free???
that´s awesome in my view.
From SX2 to 3 i think they implemmented this much as well.
Nevertheless i decided to roll back to SX2, i didn´t manage to master it well , so my move to SX3 was quite premature.

Don't get me wrong, I personally find SX3 to be a huge leap. Really it should have been SX-1. But, there are literally hundreds of work-flow bugs and half implemented features that aren't done yet. Not to mention 50 or 60 major things still missing from VST. It just pisses me off that they are talking about doing all this integration bullshit and they have so many basic elements still f**ked up.

Oh yeah... I still want Audio to MIDI (which was working perfectly in VST - and the required technical things are still there as well).
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

IMO it depends on what the integration is, if it is just the studio connections integration then it is unlikely to benefit me much as I mainly use software.

It will be interesting to see what they choose to implement, given the number of different areas that could be improved upon (How about integration inside SX, like automatically displaying names from a drum plugin in the drum editor?).

I don't know or use all the features available in SX3, I can't think of any barriers preventing an SX2 user from using SX3, unless a specific feature is broken.

Precisely the new features, even the routing, i dont use them. They just get in the way.
About freezing i think it´s a creativity killer, but hard to ignore... i just prefer rendering and keep on editing.

Obvious question: Do you realise that you don't have to use the freeze feature if you don't want to? (Even if you wanted and needed to use freeze you still wouldn't have to.)

Anyway, good luck with whichever app you choose for whatever reason. :D

Well freeze it´s like nicotine to me, really bad habit.
i have to figth it.

Well, you don't need freeze if the bounce functions worked like it did in VST, but bounce has been crippled since SX-1. It is still better than freeze, but it is far from functional like it used to be.

Another huge example is the stupid new MIDI Device panels. The PRIMARY 2 functions people want are the ability to read the patch name/params directly and to use sysex to communicate with external gear. Guess which features are NOT supported. The VST device panels did this perfectly.

I could go on and on.......I still prefer Cubase over-all, but there are so many basic things that are f**ked up that I have to vent from time to time.

Is that why you want Steinberg to offer a "patch"?
I did get a life,once...but it was faulty, so I sent it back.

I'm pleased it's not just me then...I used to be able to bounce things so easily in the past. SX just seems so laborious to rerender clips etc - first off you have to go out of your part or sample editor and then go into the pool if you want to bounce anything, then if you've loaded up an old project, you have to set a complete new folder to bounce anything into - why on earth would I want my audio split up into different folders FFS? The only render available on the arrange page automatically renders to a new audio channel every time - VST used to be so easy for things like that - select which track you want to bounce to and then do it.

And Sascha's audio to midi - still don't understand why they chucked that out - I thought they should have developed it further. Those kind of things are what make an update worthwhile. I wonder out of 60 fixes/features how many are actually a useful improvement?

I still really like Cubase, but they seem to be bloating it beyond comprehension as time goes on, instead of making it more useful or easier.

Workflow improvements - oh good, but why did they destroy the workflow that was already there to begin with?

Post

I've been a Cubase user since VST3.7 and I think SX3 is easily the best the program has ever been. The workflow improvements are fantastic. I no longer have to use the mixer window or editor windows for much of anything. It's all right there in the project window. I love how there's a little keyboard icon everywhere that will open the relevant plugin GUI. The supplied plugins, while still not as good as Logic's, are at least useful.

I never use freeze, I always use Export Audio. You can have it bring the exported file in on a new track just by checking a box, and you certainly don't have to go to the pool window to do it (sorry krikiton, don't know what you're on about).

Is Cubase a modern lightweight app? Not by any stretch. It does what I need though, and it sounds great.

My main wish is for better loop support. Look at Logic Pro 7 - that's how you do it people! (And I say this as a fervent anti-Logic bigot.)
