This depends on the format. If it's anything Winamp can play, it's fairly easy.
If it's something more propriety, it's going to be harder and other software is required.

If you can set your soundcard to record the main audio output or the "wave" output then you can capture it using windows sound recorder.

do a search for streaming on the forum, i asked this question too and got some good answers a while back

yeah, how easy it is depends on the soundcard you have. you say a basic one so that may not have much in the way of routing options. for instance, the M-Audio Delta series of cards has a mixer display showing the content on all the channels (inputs and outputs) and lets you use that mixer's output as an input - so you can use any audio recording app and use the MIXER L/R inputs (with the mixer set accordingly) to record what is being sent out of your main (windows default assigned) outputs.

'creative' range cards have a 'what you hear' option for an input, which is kinda the same thing.

the most crude workaround you can do on most basic cards is to have a wire between the line out and line in connectors - patching the audio straight back to the input. providing the card can handle recording and playback at the same time that should work. i wouldn't connect it to the mic input tho, because that is normally routed to a cheap preamp which would boost the signal way too much. you may have control over the levels on the input, but i know that some really cheap cards scrimp on the line connections because some users won't ever use them.

there is a program you can get that acts as a virtual 'what you hear' recorder, but i can't remember what it's called. i can remember that it was a bugger to use though, so i'd try what you have to hand first :)

I've been using Total Recorder for a few years now...does the job for me.

total recorder, that is indeed the application i was talking about! :D yes, it uses a virtual driver to loop the audio back to be recorded.

i think the main reason i had a problem with it tho was that it wasn't the full one and thus limited to 60seconds :hihi: i'm sure it's grand, it definitely did the job i needed at the time.
