If it only meant that in practice OS X is getting ported to run on a regular X86... which it doesn't.

But daydreaming never hurt no-one.

I definitely wouldn't rule out the possibility that OS X might be shoehorned onto a standard x86 machine (one using a superior AMD processor perhaps

I agree. Apple is a hardware company. That's how they make their money. The software stuff is a bonus. The margins are slim on software. Do people think Apple is a big software company?!?! Good God, no! That's silly. They won't switch, it won't happen. Linux and AMD is the best thing to happen to x86 chips. If it wasn't for the iPod, they'd have no money to develop new stuff. Thank goodness it was a hit otherwise, I'm sure we'd still be at 1 GHz machines.

The thing I love about the Apples I've bought is: The hold their value just like a good car. I bought a eMac for $800 (last year) used it for 8 months and sold it on eBay for $700! You can't lease a computer cheaper than that! Try that with a Dell. It's like a Chevy... the minute you drive it off the lot, it's worth half the sticker price. If they become another PC, they'll fade into history.

Yeah, and in the 360 as well.

You can already run osx on a x86 chip w/ an emulator (forgot the name of it... something like... pears? or something fruity at least).

Too bad it won't happen (maybe it's actually a good thing). Everything good about Mac would probably stop (hardware control, driver control, etc)... it would become another unstable platform.

I think if its true its good for everybody. More options for people that want to use OSX but dont believe the hype of Apple hardware. More competition for Microsoft to get their act together.

But IMHO they really needed to do SOMETHING. I cant believe they still call their notebooks "Powerbooks" LOL!! I got one at school and returned it a few days later. SO SLOW! If it wasnt so expensive I would have tossed it in the garbage.

Generally speaking, software is a higher-margin business than hardware. This may not be true in the case of Apple though because they are able to inflate the prices of their hardware due to their superior marketing. I do think that if they make this move it is a signal that Jobs is preparing to offer OSX as a software product for the general population of Intel machines. I don't expect this part of the puzzle will be announced right away though. Time will tell.

i believe something truly needed to happen.. just got delivery of a new G5 2.7 dual.. and i'm sending it back for a full refund..

the noise from the machine was appauling..

4500 eu and it sounded like a kettle boiling with a constant beep piping up too..

bad.. very bad..

hopefully they can sort somthing out .. because i have money waiting for a quiet , fast machine..

How do you figure that using an x86 based processor would make them a "PC maker"?

The only reason you cal consider Dell and Gateway that is because they sell Windows machines. Apple will still be making OSx machines, only they'd have different hardware under the hood. Much in the same way they didn't stop being different when they switched from Motorola processors to the IBM PowerPC processors.

I'd be surprised if Apple movied to Intel processors. Given how readily available parts are for x86 based computers, it would be opening the door wide open for people to build their own "Apple" PCs.. In turn, more people would want more hardware supported, which would be a bigger headache for the OSX developers. That in turn would lead to more bugs, and before you know it, OSx will be Windows.

But anyway.. we'll see later today.

Apple ditches IBM power PC chip and will use Intel.
