I tried putting a vst folder in the audacity folder as the manual says, but Audacity doesn't see them.
I tried putting the dll in the plug-in folder and that didn't work.
I also noticed that the items in the Audacity plugin folder (that come with Audacity) don't seem to show up anywhere in the program.

Maybe you're missing the Audacity VST Enabler...
... download and just follow the instructions in the readme.

You have to get the vst enabler from audacity. The vst enabler is still a bit crude and there is a lot of developement to go. The vst GUI will not be diplayed, and some-more complicated vst will not work. You have to test them one at a time.

You read the Audacity Wiki on VSTs yet?

Damn, you have to copy the plugins in the Audacity folder!
And the plugins don't have their GUI, wtf?!
offtopic:
Are you sure there's no better freeware audio editor?
What if I got a very old copy of CoolEdit? (or something..., which one was it?) I heard they were free.
Can you even loop(playback) files in Audacity?

I am fairly new to digital recording, but I find Audacity to be an extremely useful tool for editing .wav and mp3 files. It does take a little studying, but it is nothing compared to learning how to do the same editing in Sonar or Cubase. I'm not knocking the latter two programs. I just find Audacity a bit more intuitive.
