that would not be the case if you wanted to burn DVD-audio

Well maybe the same can be said of Adobe Audition, now how about Adobe Abducting A wet/dry envelope for the bus effects, then it would be really interesting for mastering, :hihi: , does any other software have this.
All I meant by that quote was that it seemed the originator of this post thought that because they were both Steinberg products there would be "exclusive" features only available to Cubase users, which there aren't. Just thought I'd clear that up :) :)

Last year I was in the market for a top-drawer effects suite, Acid/Sonar style multitrack where I could paint in loops and pitchshift/timestretch, and a full-on sample editing package.

In terms of the latter I tried the demos of Wavelab, SoundForge and Adobe Audition. I quite quickly chose Audition because it was capable of fulfilling ALL 3 NEEDS.

Unlike the other 2, Audition has a 128-track multirack audio sequencer with outstanding looping tools as described. The effects in AA are stunning, especially the EQ and the four reverbs + convolution. It also acts as a Rewire host, so sequencers like P5, Acid, Reason, Live and FLS can run inside it.

One thing I found though is that having Audition has caused me to re-evaluate my choice of main host sequencer. The host I was using at that time was especially good for multitrack audio, but I found that (imho) Audition does this significantly better, particularly because of the quality of the effects that can be used in real time, and the more flexible freeze functionality. This caused me to wonder what my host at that time WAS better at... and in the end I finishewd up changing sequencer to one that has (again, imho) more complemetary features.

I notice that you a FLS user, and suspect that you will find Audition a fantastic complement to FLS.

I need a audio editor that can really make the samples that poeple give me sound good within the remix that I make. And something easy to chop up
Audition is the only one of the three to have "frequency space editing", which allows you to visually isolate and select sounds in frequency and time using a marquee selection tool in the spectral editing view, and then clean up, modify, or apply effects to the selected sound. I think that this will give you unprecedented ability to do what you want.

Audition also has outstanding noise reduction and audio restoration tools.
2. Also, I want to edit my own sound samples that I have so that I can tweek and use them in my sequencer. I want to make them do different "tricks." Maybe even upload a whole song I'm working on and edit it a little although that's probably not necessary with the sequencers I have.
All easy to do in Audition.
3. I will be recording my own dj mixes with the audio editor and it would be nice if it had "cue points" where I can automatically turn a long wav file into seperate tracks without having to export each section where I want the new track to be.
Cue Points in Audition do exactly what you are asking for.
4. And I may use it for mastering, but then I'll have to invest in getting my room tuned...
Fine for that too. And AA is a DX/VST host so you can also use plugins like Ozone/etc
I won't be doing much recording besides the dj mixes although I will record glitches I get from my sequencer back into my computer and edit those recorded sounds with the audio editor

Do any of those programs burn CDs/DVDs as well?
CD burning yes. DVD, not yet.

I have been very happy with Audition. I use FL Studio and Live, and both were severely lacking in the audio editor department. I was also quite the noob (well, still am) but the manual is quite good plus I bought the Audition Ignite! book which has helped me tremendously. It's a very good piece of software.

Is it the *best*? No, that would be Half-Life 2.

If you were using HALion, I'd say WaveLab (because the two somewhat interact), otherwise Audition might be a top choice.
Personally I'm using WaveLab (mind you, version 3.x) because of the looping features - I'm doing quite some sampler patches myself and WL is hard to beat regarding that aspect. For anything else, my version seems to be ageing.
