I downloaded a midi file for a song I am remixing as a guide for laying new tracks at a slightly different tempo of the original song. The midi file has about 6 tracks and I want to put them all on one Sampletank2 instead of opening a Sampletank2 for each track, I have done this but now when I open the Cubase SX 1.0 midi Mixer and set the voumes how I want them my settings vanish when I re-start playback of the midi file from the beginning, so how do I set volumes for each midi channel in 1 ocurance of ST2?

It sounds like there is a MIDI volume set in the MIDI track already. To find out, use the event list in that track to hunt it down, and delete it.

There are actually three places to set volumes in a multi track single instance of Sampletank. One is the MIDI track in your host, one is in the Sampletank Mixer, and the third is in audio track in your host. I think in your case here, you would want to set the volumes on the Sampletank mixer. For use in multiple audio outputs, which is what I would recommend you use, set the volume on the audio track in your host. I'm a Sonar user, but the basic concept is the same for Sonar or Cubase. Here is a good thread that covers multiple output projects in Sonar. Most of the basic principles should apply. I have to run for now, if you have more questions, feel free to ask. I'll check in on you later to see if I can help more.

This thread refers to Sampletank LE, but the same basic principle works for XL or SS2.

Yes it's 99.99% likely that this is the cause.
Remove all the MIDI events that you don't want to have, like volume and panning.

In the piano roll editor, you can make all volume events for 1 MIDI part/track show up in one "controller area". (Dont know the exact Cubase term). Then you just hit ctrl-a to mark them all and backspace to delete them all at onece. You may also use the logical editor to abtin that result.

You're using Cubase SX, right? Also look out for a couple of things:

1) In the track inspector, set the volume parameter to "-1.

2) Sometimes when importing a MIDI file, Cubase SX can be set to strip out all the volume and pan messages and insert them onto automation tracks. Check for automation if you're still getting mysterious volume resetting.

Hope that helps.

Forever,

Kim.
