Get the UAD-1. The Pultec will leave you not wanting for URS eq's - and the compressors? Forget about finding better digital compressors anywhere. The Fairchild, 1176 and LA2A are absolutely untouchable and work magic for thickening and character.
i can agree with you almost 100%
the only thing is that the URS Eq's are a good addition to the UAD EQs cause they have a diffrent charachter

Agreed. but how most wont get to know it with that ilok only demo. Pity.

It would kick ass if UAD would partner with URS and get them to run on the UAD cards.

Why? I can run more than a hundred stereo URS EQs on my Athlon 3200XP+ (130 instances of A/N Series @ 88% CPU load w/buffers set @ 1024). It would be a waste of time and DSP...

yes - if it runs native, sounds good and don't use too muh cpu - there's no need to run it on the UAD

i really hate the fact that u can't even demo the URS
without the iLok - but in a way it's the same with
the UAD-plugins - u can't demo them without the UAD-card

Except not, because the UAD-1 card funtions as the entire brain for the UAD-1 plugins where as URS plugins are native and using the iLok merely as protection.

Why??
It has little to do with CPU load or running off the card. What it has to do is noninvasive copy protection. And the fact that both companies have a common vibe/goal.
Loading iLock/PACE on your machine is flirting with disaster.

i think both iLock and UAD-1 can screw things up badly. i doubt iLok has more hardware compatibility problems than UAD-1.
i won't get either.

Post

what are you talking about ?
If you got a correctly configured machine with decent hard- and software, there are no UAD issues that I'm aware of.
Check out the UAD forums, almost no bug threads to be found.
I got 3 UADs and 1 PoCo myself and know a bunch of people with similar setups, no problems ever.

You are wrong, UAD-1 is a simple PCI device with 100% solid drivers.
And while I am at it let me add that UA is a company that only released solid devices for the past 60 years and they stand behind every product.

... and they stand behind every product
Yeah, but will they stand in front of it when it's doing 90??? :)

Huh!.....the UAD-1 is basically a PCI video card (uses an Mpact2 GPU) designed and optimized, for DSP use. That is like saying all video cards can screw things up badly, but everyone has one. There is nothing installed, by the UAD-1 software, or inherent in the hardware, that will screw things up badly. There is no PACE involved. Some users do experience configuration issues and there are some motherboards, that just don't work well with DSP cards. They can't handle the heavy PCI throughput demands, either because, of poor design or cheap components. I had a problem with IRQ sharing (configuration issue), but once I got that sorted, both my UAD-1 cards have worked flawlessly, in my DAW. I got my first card 2.5 years ago, and my second, last summer. The popularity of the UAD-1 (more than 10,000 users and growing), speaks for itself. Many of us have two, three, some even four UAD-1's, installed in our DAW's with zero problems.

There is one compatibility problem with the Matrox G4xx cards that doesn't appear on every system. I had the G450, I got crackles. I bought a G550 instead, problem solved. Scot had a G400, and it worked flawlessly on his system, and I bought his card, so it wasn't a card issue. Card works great here otherwise after I switched.
