Odd Cubase SX3 Monitoring problem

Got a rather strange problem. I have tried searching KVR and elsewhere for an answer but to no avail. The terms involved in this issue are not very specific: 'Monitor' 'Cubase SX3' 'Issue' 'Edirol' etc gives you about a zillion hits in Google.

So... I apologise if this has been discussed and I haven't been able to find it.
:oops:

I am running Cubase SX3 on an Athlon Winchester 3500+ / Windows XP SP2.
All sound I/O is provided via Firewire, using an Edirol FA-101

The Edirol FA-101 has 8 outputs, each with their own balanced socket. Outputs 1&2 are also routed to a headphone bus.

Given this, I thught I would put my main Studio Monitors on Outputs 3&4. I have set up SX3 such that these are the default Outputs. I have renamed the Default Output Bus 'Monitors' and the left channel of this points to FA-101 Output3, the right channel points to FA-101 Output4.

I have created another Output Bus which I have named 'Headphones'. The left channel for this points to FA-101 Output1, the right channel points to FA-101 Output2. This way I can create sends to Outputs 1&2 on each channel, knowing they are going to come out on the Headphone Bus too. I can, therefore, create a completely seperate Headphone mix.

But as a result somehwere in all this, I get some seriously weird behaviour. Essentially, I am unable to monitor incoming signals.

For example, suppose I want to record some guitar. I have everything set up as it should be. I arm the appropriate track and hit 'record'. I do some strumming type stuff. I play it back and, sure enough, I have some guitar recorded.

So far, so good...

But, I am putting the guitar through some plug-in effects and would like to be able to monitor as I play. No problem, I just hit the 'Monitor' button for the track in question.
Now, here is where it gets odd. I hear the signal for only a fraction of a second and then it cuts out again. I see a corresponding burst of activity in the mixer strip for this channel.
If I disable and then re-enable the Monitor button, again, I get a fraction of a second of signal before it cuts out again.

Most strange but maybe there is a logical (or cubasical? :hihi: ) reason for why this might happen.

But the following bit completely did my head in...

If I swap Outputs 3 & 4 in the 'Monitors' Output Bus then Monitoring suddenly works fine! That is, I go from:

Monitor Left --> Output 3
Monitor Right --> Output 4
(this way I have the monitoring issue)
to

Monitor Left --> Output 4
Monitor Right --> Output 3
(this way the monitoring issue goes away)

Of course, now all my Pans are back to front. I can fix this by physically swapping the cables over. But still, I am trying to work out why swaping two outputs on this output bus should have any effect on monitoring. At all.

:shrug: :shrug: :shrug:

Has anyone else had similar things happen?

Further info...

- When the Monitoring problem is happening, I can still see the signal coming in on the Input Channels (the FA-101 has ASIO Direct Monitoring so I can control the gain of each input directly in SX3 - each input shows up on the Mixer).
So, it looks as though the signal is reaching Cubase alright. And, as I said above, I can record this signal and then play it back just fine. It seems as though it is just monitoring which is effected.

- I was using Cubase SX2 before I bought SX3. Then, everything worked fine and I didn't have this issue. So, I think it is more likely to be a Cubase SX3 issue than something wrong with my FA-101 soundcard.

Anyone got any ideas what on earth is going here???

Any thoughts gratefully received (as ever).

Yes, I suppose you are right. It just bugs me (no pun intended) that this happens.

Time for me to take the sensible approach (use the practical fix) and stop worrying about it. But I thought I'd put this out there just in case there was something obvious causing it.

Anyway, I'm glad to know it's not just me! Thanks...

Sounds like a strange one, I can't reproduce this behaviour but I have a different audio interface. Some questions-

Have you pressed both the 'record enable' and the 'monitor enable' buttons?

Does the monitoring issue only occur with mono recordings? If so, have you tried creating a mono input bus and recording from that? If you are already recording from a mono input bus try recoring from a stereo input bus. Also, if you are recording to a mono track try a stereo track (or vice versa).

I know the problem disappears when reconfiguring output bus, but I thought this could be related to the input busses.

Does the issue only occur when using effects on the audio track, or only with specific effects?

If none of that helps, it may help to ask Steinberg and Edirol support, even if you already have a workaround.

Thanks a lot cold c. Will try all this out tonight. In the meantime, as far as I remember...

- I have pressed both 'Record enable' and the monitor enable' buttons.

- I am recording a mono source from a mono bus into a stereo track. I will try these other combinations.

- It does not seem to matter which effects are in place. I tried removing them all and it made no difference.

Will let you know how it goes...

Well...

Tried everything out.

It makes no difference whether or not I am recording to a Mono or Stereo track.

It makes no difference whether or not I set up the inputs as single Mono inputs or pairs of stereo inputs.

I've tried deleting and re-creating the buses, I've tried re-installing the drivers.

And, the same issue occurs if I use Outputs 1&2, or 3&4, or 5&6, or 7&8.
In each case, if I swap the two connections over in the Stereo Output bus (and then swap the cables physically), problem solved!

Further more, I can try the Outputs in any other configuration, and it all works fine! In other words, all these are bad:

Left: 1
Right: 2

Left: 3
Right: 4

Left: 5
Right: 6

Left: 7
Right: 8

But, all these are good:

Left: 2
Right: 1

Left: 2
Right: 3

Right: 3
Left: 2

Right: 8
Left: 1

... etc

It is only when you do it the way you would normally do it that there is an issue.

So, I guess I'll just swap the cables over. I could post this to Edirol / Steinberg but quite honestly I'm not sure it will be that high on their priority list.

Still, at least this thread is now here, with a workaround, in case anyone else has similar issues.

Thanks all for your suggestions and help.
