Personally I'm happy that Apple will use Intel machines, and that's great that you like roll your own PC's , but it makes no sense to say the kind of things you do about macs, it's just stupid.

Btw. can someone tell me why macs are considered to be more suitable for "professional" work? I just started my own company so I'd like to know. I've used Windows XP for several years and it has never crashed. I understand if macs were considered superior because it was more stable, but that's not an issue anymore. The way I see it, macs are nice for surfing, writing documents, checking email, and it looks beautiful so even our wifes will enjoy it But if someone wants to be serious, a PC would be very stable and far more powerful than even a double G5.

My intentions are not to flame macs, I just want to know reasons for buying it, since I may have to if I want to continue using Logic. In my opinnion macs still have the "professional" status, even though reasons for it died years ago when WinXP came around.

The differences are smaller now. If you are doing print work, the Mac is still distinctly better for color representation across applications.

I do video work and there is nothing quite as nice as Final Cut on Windows. Also, Motion has no equal. It rocks!

Macs are historically good long term investments. Some people want the latest upgrades, but many print shops need reliability more than they need speed. There is a reason you will find a higher percentage of old macs still being used for production.

I have owned and used both platforms for professional graphics/3d animation/video/photography work for 8 years now. I am not a mac-head in that sense. I prefer PC's for some things.

For the artist who wants to not pay attention to the computer, get a mac. They are easier in many small ways.

Take your powerbook to Kinko's, plug-in the ethernet cable, type in the kinkos ip and you can print. No need to install drivers like on a Windows laptop.

Most applications are self contained. There are generally no files installed in different places on the computer. Want to delete an app? Toss it in the trash, done.

Want to connect a digital camera? In most cases you do not need drivers, just connect it via usb and away you go (XP has mostly caught up on this one). And so on... Macs are overall easier for the person who does not want to spend time with the computer, but just wants to get things done. Many people are willing to pay more for that. Many people are not.

Those are choices to make and I really don't understand the endless heated arguments. Apple controls the whole platform so obviously it all works better together, but there are less choices and higher cost. It is a trade-off.

XP is excellent, you really cannot go wrong either way. XP is plenty stable, but OSX is better. I have had my powerbook (which is used and abused as a production machine) not be shut down or restarted for 6 months at a time. Put it to sleep at night, wake it up in the morning and away you go.

I also value OSX because I can (and do) install many Linux apps on it. Also, I have no virus protection on this powerbook and have never had trouble with any sort of virus.

I have here in my home/office, 1 WinXP machine, 3 linux boxes for webservers and 2 powerbooks, 1 iMac and 1 dual G5

One thing I value very much with Macs. They are quieter. My dual G5 is quiet. This means a lot to me when I am sitting there or many hours in a day.

and yes, if you are going to run Logic, get a dual G5 machine and a multi-button mouse. Why macs still ship with only a one button mouse option is beyond me.

Personally the though of booting into OSX and using Logic 7 (L 5.5.1 PC) now and then rebooting into Windows and doing my mixdown in SAMP has me excited.

As someone also said for e.g. audiomulch, maintaining the same assembler routines for both platforms, and less issues porting will take away a lot of stress when porting and will probably lure more developers into cross-platforming.

If they price the new macs a tad more expensive that ready-made stuff from DELL or HP i know i'd jump ship in the blink of an eye and many more users will be tempted. More sales = bigger audience for platform = more software for platform.

But what has me wet is the thought of a cross platform plugin standard i.e the same exact file to run on both pc and mac. Since both will be using x86, hence all the processing code could be kept the same and then a thin layer a la WINE could take over to do UI and interfacing with apps with minimal performance degradation over completely native.
