I have been spending some time with the Capsules, and really like this set. I've been loading the sounds into different formats, and learning quite a bit about Samples as a result. The fact that you can load them into other formats really does add a lot to the value of these sets.
The guitar sounds are so playable, and diverse.
It was really fun at the end of the group buy to see it go to the lowest price. That really made this an extra fun group buy. Thanks to everyone who got in, especially near the end when it didn't look like we'd make it. Thanks Squids, for a fun group buy, and for offering us such a great deal on these great sounds.
How do you guys feel about them?

My favourite is the eclectic drum capsule. There's tons of great stuff in there - especially with ST2's effects! Studio drums and groove capsule are top stuff too. And the acoustic guitar capsule. And the electric guitar and bass capsules too.
You know what? They're all good!
Forever,
Kim.

I personally think Studio Drums are terrible. Listen to the individual samples closer. On at least one of the samples you can hear what sounds like the drummer talking to the engineer. Not to mention the fact that they were recorded in 24bit, and dithered down to 16bit (adding more noise if you record in 24bit, and dither to 16bit). And why are the sets so small?

In what situation would this be a problem? Surely the talking is not loud enough to be noticeable in real-life use. Name the kit and drum where you can hear this.devon wrote:Listen to the individual samples closer. On at least one of the samples you can hear what sounds like the drummer talking to the engineer.
Again, in what situation would this be a problem? 16-bit dither adds noise at about -90dB. Is anyone going to hear that? Would you prefer truncating to 16bit, or 24-bit kits that require 50% extra memory? If you're into LARGE multi-gigabyte drumkits, Studio Drums Capsule isn't it.devon wrote:Not to mention the fact that they were recorded in 24bit, and dithered down to 16bit (adding more noise if you record in 24bit, and dither to 16bit). Is there something you're not telling us? Surely those two reasons you've given are hardly justification for calling the Studio Drums Capsule "terrible". Maybe you dislike the sound of the kits, or maybe the capsule is not what you're looking for in a drum library, but the Studio Drums Capsule is far from "terrible".devon wrote:I personally think Studio Drums are terrible.

FWIW I'm not really happy with the Studio Drum capsule either. I've had it for a while. I'll use it with REASON occasionally. I've pulled a couple of the snares out and mapped them for DR-008. I was used to the way the UFO worked with Sonic Station and it seems odd to me now. My goto kit for most projects is a little over 165 MB and doesn't use any SR samples.
It's still on my hard drive and I will load up a kit in Battery or Kontakt during the songwriting process.
Just another opinion to add to the pile.

I've been really happy with the Studio Drums Capsule. I must have missed the sample with the engineer talking. I feel like the quality is similar to what is in SS2. Interesting this post got called up after sitting in the wells for 2 months, with little comment, but it gives me an excuse to say again that I think this group buy was a great addition to my library, and a terrific deal.
Personally, the Capsule I use the least is the Bass, but that's just me. My favorite is still the Acoustic Guitar Capsule. I really enjoy playing those sounds. I haven't used it in a project yet, because everyone says I sound like a keyboard player playing a guitar, but I'm practicing.

No offense but you guys are nuts if you don't like the Studio Drums Capsule! That library rocks. We all love that one and use it all the time. I have to check on the "engineer talking to drummer" samples (woops) but I can bet there are maybe one or two out of thousands of samples that might have that at the very end of the tail and even then you wouldn't even notice in a track... On Led Zep tracks you can hear Bonham talking and grunting all over the place! I imagine a lot of tracks. But, anyway, that can easily be fixed in an update.
As for dithering, some stuff was recorded 24 bit and some stuff was recorded 16. A lot of times I record at BOTH at the same time. However, I don't think there is anything audible about that.
The drum kits are NOT small at all. They're not huge but they are a good size for getting a lot of variety. Plus we went to a lot of effort to map them every which way GM, Imap, separate drums and full kits...
It's a great library and one of our best sellers too. You can make some GREAT sounding tracks with it. That's the most important aspect as any top producer will tell you.
