Acid Pro 5 rewired to Cubase SX2 sync/loop problems

Hi KVR fam:

Anyone out there got this combo to work ?

I have Cubase SX v2.20.33 and I am trying to rewire it to ACID Pro5. I have tried everything I can think of. It starts out alright as long you don't go back and forth between the two apps for transport.

I sort of have it running and in sync but one wrong button, and acid hangs. It takes a while to close down before I get control back in cubase.

I have searched both Cubase and ACID forums but no luck. a few poople seem have similar stability issues when rewireing these two.

funny thing is, Project5 in rewire slave mode is as stable as a rock with no real special tweaks to Cubase. I can readily change between the transport or loop positions on either and it's reflected in the other just like the manual says for both apps.

Is the problem with Acid 5 or another one of those
"hit this button" type things?

Please help....it's driving me crazy!

Setup:
Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop, 2GHz centrino
7200rpm main HDD, 5400rpm aux HDD
Win XP, SP2
Echo Layla 2496 w/PCMCIA Layla Laptop card

Setup is rock solid otherwise.

Do you have 'release ASIO driver in background' unchecked in the Devices -device setup- VST MUltitrack section?

Post

I had sync issues trying to get Acid PRO 5 to slave to SX2/3 via ReWire, basically there were 'minor' but irritating pops/clicks at the loop points. The severity of the pops clicks could be reduced by lowering the ASIO latency in SX, so you could try adjusting that. I also tried adjusting the priority of the applications in task manager and in the applications themselves but that didn't help much (but try adjusting it anyway).

I also tried with the more recent updates of the apps and it made no difference, but others seem to be able to use that combination of software so it could be related to drivers.

Steinberg and Sonyfo support couldn't or didn't help with the issue.

No prblem here.

Well, you know as Sony has always said, "Yes, we are the last to the dance sometimes." So don't expect them to walk right in and mix well with the rest of the party when they finally do decide to show up. Just be happy that you even have a chance of rewiring your multitrack/midi host with Acid. It doesn't even appear as an option with their own multitracker.

I'll probably be installing Cubase SX this week, I'll let you know if I figure anything out.

Thanks Rednroll and all:

yes, I tried all of the suggestions, but no luck.
I was able to get it to be "almost" undetectable but
could not figure out what it was. The clicks from looping are still there, but the hang/drift/loss of sync went from rewire-to-haywire! (hey, i like that)!

Anyway, I found that the acid song had a VSTi enabled in the mix buss, though I wasn't using it.
I bypassed all the effects and removed this VSTi from the song and everything stayed locked. BUT the
looping clicks are still there. Reducing the layla buffers from the default 512 to 256 seemed to work best.

Maybe, I just have to give up on rewire + looping approach altogather. (again, Project5's rewire is smooth-as-silk and i have to do...nada! So, maybe
changing my work flow would be easier:

1) create ideas, beats, loops, etc., in ACID.
2) Render the busses out to a folder.
3) import the loops, clips, MIDI files, in Cubase

Note: i found a cool feature in cubase that allows you to repeat import of a clip. It will repatedly line up the clip head-to-tail perfectly. I think if I do this with "snap-to-grid" enabled and a "tempo track" enabled, I'd end up with essentially the same thing as I had in ACID.(i think).

4) Then add multi-tracks or midi until song is done.

This work flow is a bit more convoluted, but it should work.

Hey Red, you were very helpful on the vegas boards as well! I have all but totally given up on them.
(that last exchange with peter did it for me......
"a video app with audio capabilities"!!!...after that, I just gave up hope of ever getting rewire or tempo mapping out of them. So I, like you thought there might be some hope for ACID). Now all this waiting to "dance the 2-box step"? Unless someone has an answer, a workflow change seems like the ticket to me since even other forum's suggestions didn't work either.

Speaking of V5 for msec, Cubase for editing is just not in the same league. So i'm still starting out multitrack arranging and editing in V5a. Then render the busses out and into Cubase to add the midi parts/vsti's to finish the song.

(I actually started exploring cubendo because thier MMC implementation worked flawless with my old black-face ADAT and the layla 2496 w/jlcooper datasync2).

I'm finding the more I fight with Cubase, the more i'm learning how to do the things "almost" as effeciently as i used to it do with...well, you know.

Anyway, I just gotta believe this rewire issue is ACID 5 based. I also can't figure out how to route the buss outputs from ACID to the cubase mixer like i can with project5. Only the master buss outs have a signal in the Cubase mixer. (Have you Red, or anyone else, tried that yet? Red, you are using the "beautiful" layla 2496 right?

Thanks for all the help kvr fam.

PS
Oh, and to Cold who said they "had this working", what is your setup? HW interface? buffer settings / latency?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

peace.

I've had issues with ReWire with Acid between Sonar and Reason before. This usually happens right after I install Acid and Sonar and Reason were on the system already. Rewire gets all screwy. In the past, a reinstall of Sonar or Acid has fixed the problem.

rahmankb,
Sorry So long to get back to you. I haven't been successfull in getting Acid Rewired to Cubase SX2. They seem to Sync together but I can't get the audio from Acid to be outputed to Cubase.

One other thing I noticed today, I'm not sure if it's related to the Rewire sync problem you're seeing, but if I'm Sending MTC or Midi Beat Clock from Acid, Acid will only send the Sync Timecode the first time it plays through. So if you have Acid in Loop playback and have an External Sequencer like I do, They will play fine the first time it plays, but Acid stops sending once it loops back to the beginning of your loop playback point.

Hi Red and all:

I was able to get the audio in Acid to show up by simply changing:
1) the number of stereo ports in ->preferences>Audio>Rewire Device Mode>Advanced
2) then route the output busses to those extra port outputs in the Acid mixer.

Now all your channels should show up in SX2 mixer.

In SX2, I did try a bunch of different settings under ->transport>sync setup for MTC in/out etc., it didn't help with the looping glitch.
In my setup, I have an ASR-10 Midi out going to layla and using this as only a KB controller for softsynths. The timing sync in SX is set for layla midi output/input. I remember trying this too, use acid to send the midi clock info to lock the two togather. It didn't help the looping glitch in this config for me either.

I think I'm just gonna go back to my original work-around for this.
I can get them to sync, just NOT loop. I'll have to just live with it for now.

I also think sgx's comment about "a reinstall of either app fixed his problem" might be a key. Note: I say this might be a clue because i suspect that if you have Vegas or Acid on a PC and then install Sonar, Sonar will not behave. I had originally given up trying to use SONAR because every version from 1-4 never worked right on my systems. (By accident once I installed it before I had loaded up all my SF apps, and it ran like a dream briefly. So I too had the thought that...hmmm, maybe sonar, vegas, same PC is not good??? At that time, I dismissed this possibility. Now, maybe I'm thinking I was on to something other than just lack of sleep)!

Anyway, SX2 is working out for now, and i'm getting some stuff done. and the work-around is not tooo painful. So I'm working with that unless someone here says "thier looping is perfect with these two" and "while running an Echo interface".

thanks again.

peace to all
