I have re-instated the free download service at Hollow Sun albeit not on the scale of before.

Instead of providing shedloads of sounds for free and unlimited plundering, I will be providing 'featured sounds' that will be updated regularly.

The first offering is a fantastic set of sounds from an Oberheim OB8 that comes courtesy of one Dana Fiorucci. I have looped, optimised and otherwise programmed them for the S5/6000 (and, of course, Z4/8 and MPC4000). Chicken Systems' TRANSLATOR will convert them to other sampler formats (or you can do your own manual translations.... it's not rocket science!).

Dana Fiorucci who donated these Oberheim sounds has also contributed a bunch of Reason NN-XT patches using my looped and optimised version of his raw samples.

Reason owners should download the 'OB8 Saws' samples and discard the S5/6000 AKP programs. Now get the 'OB8 Saws NN-XT' download and do the business in Reason.

That's very nice. I think I downloaded many of your older gifts for all of us and enjoyed them THIS much. I learned how many of those loving machines sound like, as I never had the chance to listen to one anywhere (well, besides them being used in records with much other stuff). So you see what "loving the mellotron" can take you to...

That's very generous of you to release free samples again, thanks!

A suggestion, if I may...if this is going to be a "rotating" feature, rather than an archive like before, it might be nice to include in the download a text file of your write-up on the featured synth, as your descriptions have always been very informative, and it would be a shame to lose them everytime you update.

No problem - it has always been important to me to retain (somehow) a free service and this seems to be a good compromise.

Ah no - once the 'featured download' is superceded by something else, the actual instrument history will be placed in the 'museum' where you can still read about the thing but without the freebie download.

How does that strike you?

Thanks for the comment/suggestion though (and I am extremely glad to know that the instrument histories are as important to you as the downloads themselves and have some 'educational' value - this was always a major part of the Hollow Sun ethos).

I think the instrument histories are very well written and the best source available for vintage synths! www.vintagesynth.com and others have maybe more complete coverage in terms of number of synths but www.hollowsun.com is more personal and in depth. I allways enjoy reading them!

Hi Sascha - yes please! Email them to me and I'll post 'em up on the page.

Now that I have split with Akai, my allegiance to that format is (sadly) not as strong as it was (although I am still a firm advocate of the hardware sampler for a variety of reasons).

So yes - your EXS/Kontakt patches would be welcome. If you want to apply your usual magic to them as you did with my CD collections, go ahead... go wild!

I also see this as a new direction for the Hollow Sun community and the new free download service - to provide programs/patches at HS other than just S5/6000.

I can't check your sounds at all (I won't have a s/w sampler pollute my Mac

) but I trust you to deliver the goods - you have in the past!

That's good (and re-assuring) to know.

I must admit, I have always had this sneaking suspicion that people couldn't give a toss about the instrument histories but it was always an important part of the 'service' as there are many (the 'yoof') that arbitrarily use Rhodes and Clav and Tron samples in their music but haven't got the faintest clue of what they are. As an example, I received an email not so long ago from a 'DJ/Producer' (hmmmmm - probably a euphemism for a 14-yr-old with a PC!) who didn't actually know that the TR808 was a stand-alone drum machine

The purpose of HS has always been to educate as well as provide quality sounds and although I know that some appreciate the effort that goes into the instrument histories (they are now a part of many worldwide universities' Music Technology curriculum!) but, with respect, given the high 'leech factor' of the site, I have always assumed that people get the sounds without a second thought to their history.

My descriptions are usually based on real and personal experience of using the instruments in their heyday. Some, of course (the obsure and rare donations) rely on either research and/or the experience of the donors but even if I have not personally owned some instrument or another that is featured at HS, I have as a session programmer/player (or whatever) had some real-world practical experience of them in one way or another.... or maybe I reviewed them for some magazine. In other words, my perspective is always very 'personal' and not just a re-print of a spec sheet.

Whatever, it's very gratifying to know that the effort that goes into writing these histories is appreciated.
