Does anyone know of any software that will let me record sounds from within my PC (NOT CDs or DVD's, but from a non music programme) without me having to record the output from my sound card?
I hope this makes sense. I am sure I have seen something that does this but cannot think what it is called.

Didn't do what I was hoping. I seem to recall on an old PC with a Live card, that it had the option to record 'What you hear' (or something), ie any sounds from any source within the PC, in to its sound editor.

What soundcard are you using ? If it's a SB live and you are using the KX driver then you can route anything to anything (eg. LR outputs to a channel input). Very powerful.
If it's an ESI product them u can also use the Direct wire feature.. Im sure most other ASIO enabled soundcards have routing features too...
If you use the windows sound control pannel, then you can select 'what you hear' or something similar (i forgot exactly what) and it works the same... in most situtations you have to prevent feedback loops (disable monitoring on the record enabled track).
If any of this seems possible maybe i can dig deeper... though knowing your soundcard and the driver's routing possibilities would be of a big help.

yes but the voxengo is like tape it.. it works as a VST insert plug.. and so can only record whats playing within the host.. from what i rekon the OP wasnts to record any source being played within his computer.. could be winamp or the media player...
Goseba, i am not familier with the m-audio cards. Have you studied the installed m-audio applet proper ?
I dont have the windows wave recorder (comes with the entertainment tools in the program list) maybe you can see what possibilities that has to offer.

I have had a good play around with various options on the m-audio and windows side but without success.
Seeing as I still have my old PC for general use, I may as well use that and transfer the wavs to my music PC. I have just tested it and the Creative software does have the 'What you hear' option and it does what I want.
It is bugging me though, because I am sure I have seen software recently that will do exactly what I want.

This works, renders any sound going through your sound card as either an mp3 or a wav, it's easy to use and free. Voila!

You might find Total Recorder to suite your needs.
The more I hang around at KVR the less music I make.
