so - does anyone know - are they like freeware, time- or feature-limited demos, or what? nothing on the site indicates what type of demo they are, and i don't want to install if i'm just gonna have to remove 'em later; my system is too gunked up with residue from old plug-ins, apps, as it is.

On the other hand, if they're free...
It's better to burn out...than it is to um..to um...well, something, anyway...

Oh yeah, almost forgot - they have a "twang combo" (fender twin 'verb, i think), plexi (like a marshall combo amp) and an AC combo (like a VOX amp from the 60s-70s). Does anyone know if they're giving these away to lure you to Guitar Rig? (I already tried the demo, and I'm sold - but my bank account says otherwise...)

No, they are not free.

However, the demo is generous: 30 days (fully-functional)

IMO, the AC Combo is the best (followed by Twang Combo. Did not much care for the Plexi)

Has anyone been able to use samples with the combos? I tried the Ultimate Guitar Kit soundfount/sfz with Twang Combo, but I couldn't get any audio at all.

I like the Plexi, but it's not worth $80. The AC30 seemed nice, and I haven't demoed the Twang yet.

Dear God these plugs are noisy!

The plexi in particular; there's no excuse for this level of hiss.

CRAP.

er...

how to say this diplomatically...

Your signal path must suck. ;)

How do I say this diplomatically...

I don't believe you have any idea what you are talking about.

If you had used the combos then you might have at least a clue. Either that or you are a regular internet fan-boy who WILL NOT have his beloved amp-sim rubbished.

My Chain:

G&L Asat, decent guitar lead, Joe Meek Fathead preamp, balanced-out, Midiman Delta 1010.

The higher gain settings on these 'combos' are hissier than my late 60s valve head which is equipped with VERY nasty chinese valves.

CRAP.

Nice attitude, asshole. Despite your being an asshole, I'm willing to admit you're right. I am not a fanboy, but I DID demo the Plexi and didn't remember much hiss. Rather than just argue, though, I loaded it up again intent on proving that you're an idiot.

It's pretty hissy. Unacceptably hissy, even. If that was something intentional (emulating the 'air' [ie. hiss] you can hear on a cranked high-gain amp) then they really shouldn't have done it, because it does detract from the plug-in.

In conclusion, I'm now convinced that you're right. Hope it feels good, because in the meantime, you've also successfully proven by yourself that you're a bit of a twat.

Greg
Yeah.

I'm the twat.

Let's just re-cap shall we?

1. I post remarking on the crappy hiss-hell of the combos.

2. You post claiming that my signal-path sucks.

3. I point out that you don't have a clue.

4. You call me an asshole whilst admiting that when you claimed my signal path 'sucked' you actually hadn't ever tested the plugs for noise.

Meh.

CLUE:

Next time trying investigating before commenting.

So we're both assholes, then, if that makes you feel better. ;) You certainly seemed defensive about your signal path. It's not like I had insulted you personally. So yeah, I'd say that makes you more the twat than the guy who merely jumped to a false conclusion about your path.

Nice guitar, though.

OK, sorry then.

I shall eat my slice of humble pie.

This may sound weird but after using Guitar Rig for a few months, I now find that my recordings are actually benefiting from the hiss/noise that this plugin produces. Since basically all my sounds besides vocals reside inside my computer my recordings tended to seem very digital. This noise that is produced, found primarily on a bass setting maxxed out that i like to use, is providing me with exactly the masking effects I need to make my recordings and instruments mesh together better. I agree with Lunchbox that this plugin is awsome. To championshiprabbit, not sure if your looking to make club music/dance but rock and roll is noisy and this plugins simulates it perfectly in my opioion.

Dear assholes :-)...there is definitely no reason to argue about the NI Guitar Sims. They simply suck :-)..!!!...I mean, they are simulating a worst case recording setup in Ali's Kebap Recording Studios...
