This summer I'm planning on making a new cajon, a merimbula, some gourd instruments, and maybe a Fender P Bass clone. Also, some day when I get the money, I'm going to build me a custom drum kit.

a "new cajon? That implies you've already made one...

Show us your cajones!

(very cool stuff, btw! what grit sandpaper did you end up using?)

I've built 4 so far, sold 3 of them. :) The first picture up there was the seconed one I built. It's the one I use. I traded the first one I built to my drum teacher for drum lessons. This is the latest one I sold:

The new one will be even more like a box. :D

I don't remember, but I think the sandpaper was 120 grit. That and the thumb piano were really easy and cheap to make. Pretty much just found the materials around the house.

Cheers,

i've been wondering myself about the DIY electronic kits, as i see you could make a harware reverb unit for about $20.

really very cool o'malley 8)
between your synths and your physical instruments, you've built a band!

You can make really cheap guitar pedals too. I started making a fuzz box once but I never finished it.

pretty much any household item has its musical properties... my bro effectively used a vacuum cleaner and a refrigerator on one of his albums (no effects other than a small dab of reverb for mixing purposes)

Do I get to play? :D :D

8) cool thread, i've nothing to compete with tomg, however i'm lucky to have a junk/recycle shop down the road from me, and japanese junk is quite something! haven't built much yet, but here's an old akai sampler that cost me next to nothing, and a pair of homemade pads which can be hit or stood upon, and further used to transmit midi - great for practical jokes when placed strategically:

my true purpose is working toward an art installation (long-term), these pads will trigger both sound and mechanical contraptions a la heath robinson, here's an example of giant insects:

well, no pictures here (i got no camera, and it's ugly anyways :P ) but i made a pvc didge. and it's the best thing ever. the sound is so deep and i can change the timbre in so many ways, it's unbelievable. the sonic range is so big and i only play it recreationally once in a while... wonder what the best didge players could do with it.

I made a 3 strong bends in it to add upper harmonics, loads of bumps, and made a small bell by pushing the heated pipe on a bottle of cheap wine (the kind that reaks of sulfur :P). (i dumped the wine into the toilet :P ). I didn't make a mouthpiece, i don't really know how to do it, and it works just fine without a mouthpiece (i melted the mouth end so it doesn't have rough edges and kinda extends in a way that lets me put my mouth inside it)

other than that, i make all my cables. Especially midi cables, they're at least 50 times cheaper to make than the ones you can buy at the store. And they're at least 5 times longer. And have the same connectors :P

I also made my midi "interface" for my SB Live. I fit the whole darned thing inside the joystick jack. Was tough, but i succeeded 8)

Clockwork, though.

I took my old pc speakers and put new speakers inside them. Just left the boxes. They perform okay, and definitely much better than what a poor maths student could afford ;)

Got an amp for them, which was "broken", all i had to do is change the output transistors - an equivalent 2 USD :):)

Once i get around some cash, i'm gonna make a midibox sid from http://www.ucapps.de which is a 4-voice multitimbral analog synthesizer with midi, patch memory and whatnot.... also, perhaps i'll make myself a drumkit, the 8080 (clone of 808 :P )

Don't be afraid to experiment. it's good for you...

I found an old bamboo didg in a basement once, fixed all the cracks and made a new mouthpiece with beeswax. Works pretty good.

I had a friend that made a PVC didg like yours though, it was pretty awsome!

I had another friend that got a broken DJ mixer for free, and all he had to do to fix it was reverse two wires inside. :)

I was going to build that once!!!

I never found the CMOS hex invertor chip though.

... I didn't look very hard though. :dog:

cheater your not going to get away with not posting a pic of your frankenstien creation :x It sounds awesome and something I could make. What angles are the bends at, how many, and how is the bell made, did you saw the bottom of the wine bottle off or something?
