If you do a Google Image search, you will find that most of the glockenspiels have two rows of bars, although there are variations. Also, some glockenspiels apparently have resonator tubes beneath the bars, while other glocks do not.

Glockenspiels are also sometimes referred to by different names, such as orchestra bells, and the bell lyre or bell lyra.

You might want to take a quick look at these:

again I sold one once and I agree, too bad I didn't sell it too me (actually I would of sold it to my computer alter ego...Roland Dube...employees couldn't buy used gear for like 6 months). At the time I neverd considered the possibilies of it. Now in hindsight it is very cool and would of been also good for exposure to music for my daughter.... :D

vibraphones/Marimbas kick ass and have wooden bars. With soft mallets you can make almost drone/pad-like sounds on one. I personally love the marimba.

xylophones have metal bars and are almost exclusively played with hard mallets.
Actually, Xylophones/Marimbas have wood bars...

Vibraphones have metal bars and a motor that turns a cam over the resonator tubes that produce a vibrato.
metalaphone+vibrato= vibraphone.
seeing how you're right about the Vibraphone I'll assume you're correct on the rest...I was not aware of the fact that xylophones had only wood bars...

I've played on some with plastic looking bars or some type of resin or something. Sounded like crap though. Wood is definatly the best IMO.

Yeah, xylophones have wooden bars and glockenspiels have metal bars as it translates as "bell play" (kind of) from german.

Not many wooden bells...

Properly speaking, it's not a xylophone if the the bars aren't wood (Greek "xylo-" = "wood").
("metal xylophone" = metallophone)

Almost forgot about the Celesta! since we're on the subject of mallet instruments:

It has metal bars like a Glockenspiel, but it is played with a piano keyboard. Yamaha makes a super nice one!

I'll gladly patch them together :)
