DS404, where do I put it?

I use fruityloops, and have a copy of CM's DS404. The question is, do I load it as a generator, or as an effect and control it via MIDI out.

You use DS404 just like you use any other VST instrument. First, copy the DS404.dll file into your regular VST plugins folder (the one you'll find inside the Fruityloops folder if you're not using a shared folder).
Then, fire up Fruity and go to Channels->Add One->More. This will show a list of all plugins installed on the system. Look down to the bottom where there's a button labelled "refresh" - click it, and select "Fast Scan" from the popup menu that appears. If Fruity can find DS404 OK, it will automatically add it to the list of plugins. Now simply double-click on DS404 in the list of plugins and one will be added to your track e "voila"
Here's three Fruity-related tips for you.
First tip - never use the step sequencer with VST instruments, always use the Piano Roll.
Second tip - Fruity doesn't automatically route stuff like Aftertouch and Mod Wheel into VST plugins, you'll need to use a MIDI Out module for that and set it and the plugin to the same MIDI port. Then, you can configure each controller you need to use.
Third tip - read the manual thoroughly. You won't be able to make head or tail of DS404 unless you do this. It is a *very* powerful sampler.

I didn't realise that MIDI out could control a VSIi generator.
That's what comes from on screen manuals, I printed yours out, but Fruity's manuals too big. I like to take a book to bed with me, then if I have a problem understanding, go to my computer and work it out.

I'm not sure why it is that the VSTi wrapper doesn't receive aftertouch, CC, modwheel etc. automatically, you'd have to ask the Fruity team why on earth they decided to do it like that.
However, using a MIDI out module to control a VSTi is relatively painless, and once you've configured it for the controllers you use most often you can save the whole thing as a preset. So long as you set the MIDI out port to the same port on DS404 you'll be rocking.

Once again thanks.
All we need now is for FruityLoops to support multiple O/Ps. (Though that can't be far off, given the number of VSTis that support them.)
As someone else asked in another thread, is there any chance of a Muon sampler supporting 404 and other formats?

Multiple outputs in Fruity would be nice, I agree.
There will be an upgrade path from DS404 to a Muon product in the future, codename Tachyon. You'll have to wait a while for it though, and nothing (features etc) is really ready to be announced right now.
Having said that, we have firm plans at this time to create Tachyon P, a free DS404 file player (no editing features) that will have the DS404 engine + a nice multi-FX unit. Coupled with some of the wicked DS404 patches we've got lined up for release, that's going to be one to watch out for.
