I saw some footage of early pink floyd, and they sounded like a unimaginative velvet underground covers band.

Wrong, if only because everyone in Pink Floyd can actually sing, whereas no one in the Velvet Underground could.

Unless they can come up with somthing new it won't work so all you will get to hear are just the classics.

Pink Floyd still rule. Anyone who has seen Roger Waters live knows that he can still cut it... and with the rest of his cronies in tow, it will be good- even if all they do is play for 10 minutes =)
