I've been thinking about buying Kompakt in the near future. What I'd like to do is put the Kompakt VST on my laptop, and the samples on a USB/Firewire drive. Has anyone tried this?

...don't know about Kompakt itself, but i'm doing that with some other software (like Wusikstation) and it works fine...

When I owned Kompakt (I don't any more), it installed the samples in a subdirectory of the installation directory. I don't remember now if it was expected to be there, or just the default location. As Kompakt can handle Kontakt files and import file formats other than their own, I'm sure there's some way to navigate through a filesystem.

What about VSTs that use a Kompakt player, like Hardcore Bass, EWQLSO, etc.?

Those players are locked to their own content, but I can't help you about if they're locked to the directory - maybe someone else has tried it.

I know Kontakt (not sure about Kompakt) can play the custom content once the custom player has been authorized, but Kontakt is "big ticket".

I have a few Kompakt instruments, and I run them with the sample contents on an external firewire drive, no problem. Also, if you move the samples, it will just tell you it can't find the data directory...then you just point to where the new location is, and you're set.

During installation, just pay attention to what is being installed, and direct the installer to the desired directory, for the VSTi/.dll file(your plugins folder), and the library(sample content).

Hope this helps.
