Do these not go together? I have a stereo filter I just d/l, and I plan to apply it on a mono drum file. How will it affect the sound?

Whats your host? In Cubase, a stereo plugin applied to a mono audio track creates a mono mix. If you want a stereo mix, you need to create a stereo Group channel and assign the mono track to that, then insert the stereo plug into the stereo Group channel. However - if you are playing a mono wave file in a stereo sampler, the VST audio channel is already stereo, and therefore the insert will work in stereo anyway.

I'm just using FL. I wondered because I wanted to keep the drums mono, and I feared that perhaps if I used a stereo effect on a mono file it would alter it in some way.
How I have it setup in FL is like this...
On for instance the drum, I insert first dfx's monomaker to make it a mono, and then I apply whatever effects after that on the insert for the drum, and so on for the snare and everything.

Yep - it's as you fear, using a stereo effect will definately alter it in some way ...
Your mono maker would simply pan left and right to the centre, creating two identical channels. It depends on what the stereo effect is. An eq or compressor would just treat each side the same because they are the same. A reverb or stereo delay would create a stereo spread, because that's what it's designed to do. If you want a mono effect, apply you mono maker after the effect.
