Hi Steffensen,
Hows the music going fella, coming on i hope! I posted a couple more samples up over Sp3d's place if you're interested.
Right then, this CD - looks like a complete scam to me mate, dont waste your cash on it. You could rent a 909 / 808 and for much less than the cost of this disc. Then just sample all the hits you like, and have a blast doing it (the 909 is great fun!).
There are plenty of free 909 samples on the net. Some better than others, so it pays to mix and match. Hollowsun should be your first port of call, the 909 samples arent too good but the rest a great. Rebirth alsohas some great 909 and 808 samples built into it and should be really cheap nowadays.
What ever you do, DO NOT spend $200 on a set of 909 samples!

One thing me and bManic (sorry to use his name without his consent) have been talking about is sampling some toys like my 909, through some gear we have access to... the idea being that we put the stuff through Sintefex (various preamps, EQs and compressors), Amek, this funky old-as-hell Studer mixer I've recently encountered, and so on.
The aim is to do some characterful versions of the sounds, utilizing the processing available. No distorted gabba kicks and such, but clean, solid, thumping stuff.
Currently I have no access to a 808, but as part of this "dance drum pack" I'll also try out some other drum machines. Novation's DrumStation comes to mind, for a tad different sounding but still close to the originals material... and a selection of other similar kicks, snares and hats I've accumulated over the years. Would love to get one of those Jomox boxes for this, don't know what they've done with their 909 hihats but they're better sounding than my 909
And of course, once it's done, I'll put the stuff online. No ETA though as bManic is busy doing something that keeps him in bread.
Regards,
JMH

hey tee boy!
how are u mate?
well, as u know, ive been away on vacation, finally back to my daw now tho.
but yea thanks to you im getting closer n closer to the music i wanna make! finally things are getting more in place, all the things uve taught me have more or less sinked in and ive started to get control over things.
new samples? gimme! hehe.. i really enjoyed all those samples the other day, totally wicked!
about the 909,
well.. ive checked out all the crappy 909 packs on the net, and they didnt do it for me. i want quality and lots of variations.
thats why this cd looks good, but sure..that wizoo cd looks good to.
ive tried rebirth, but well.. i hate rewire. too much of a hassle, if i dont sample what i want that is. but still..there is something about the rebirth 909's that just doesnt cut if for me?
renting a real 909 would be so awesome tho! wish i could do that. but there arent any availble over here, not what i know of anyway.
thing is.. thanks to you tee boy, i have all the drums i could want/need thru layering etc. i only want these 909's for fun, to see what i can do with a single 909 set. thought i was gonna make some old school techno.
so spending 200$ just for fun is probly not a good idea i guess.
regarding 808's, this is probly the best stuff ive ever heard, and will hear:

jmh, im so very much looking forward for your sampling the 909!

how about waldorf attack? it can do a pretty solid 909 kit (at least to my ears - never owned a 909 but heard plenty of samples)
Also it goes waaay beyond the 909.

personally, attack sounds thin and doesnt make it at all for me. and yes, i have tweaked it a lot.
the only thing that got the 909 sound, is the 909 itself. even tho there are some drumsynths that reminds of the 909, noone have the true feeling of it. if i were to use a drumsynth, i rather use Drumatic 3. best drumsynth ive ever heard.

Oh we are talking about the 909. Interesting cause right now Im working out how to connect up my 808, 303, and sync box, thats been in my closet for years, to my machine with traction, and its a slow proccess. To make it interesting Iv recorded the code on tape and then transferred it to my machine, which will be sent out on a extra output. The 808 has individual outputs for each sound, which means a lot of leads, a sub mixer ect, but Iv got 6 inputs on my machine I can utalize. Iv always felt that the 808 sounded better than 909, because its analogue, though it uses an older type midi specification, which is not compatible with todays midi, though the 909 I think is.
I think $200(is it Aus or American currency), is a bit high. There are many sites about for 909 or 808 samples. You find ussualy the 909 is tuned down to match the 808. Hollow Sun did have free 808 or 909 samples. There was a site dedicated for 808, and the sample were very thoughrer, the clearest and the cleanest samples Iv heard, of an 808. The easiest way is Computer music's SR202 which came with, I think, the 808 and the 909 patches. Simply just buy a copy of the latest Computer Music magazine which should have the SR202 and its patches.

so it happens, i ran into a dude on the net jus tnow, that own this TR909 cd we're talking about, and he sent me some demos of it. it sounded pretty crappy.
and Rangtangtang,
sounds that u have something nice goin on there with thr 808/303 n all.
i have tried that SR202 before, and those samples didnt impress me much.
as u all see, there are a LOT of 909's out there, but none of them are really good it seems.
anyways..this isnt THAT important for me, i just wanted a set to play with, for fun. if there isnt any out there, fine, ill manage.
still, gonna keep an eye on the local music stores, to see if they get an 909 soemday. then im gonna borrow it.

I think a sample CD dedicated to clean and processed versions of classic drum machines is a winner. Far from original, but still everyone needs new drum hits right? Thing is that most sound shite. They're poorly mixed and edited, or processed beyond usefulness. If you can be subtle but creative in you're processing, then this could be a great CD.
As I mentioned before, renting is a great way to get these machines. Iv seen 808's and 909's up for around 20GBP a day. You could take many sample in a day! Others could be found on ebay for silly prices - i saw a Drumulator go for like 12GBP a few weeks ago.
btw, Stefensen, those 808 samples a sweet. I got them a while back (from another place though), the snares and kicks are spot on. I still prefer the Wizoo 808, cuz its really excellent. But as freebies those samples rock. Pity the 909 ones are shite (he also does a 909 pack).
