I'm interested in knowing what its like being a signed artist

1) Do you really get f***** over as far as royalties, money is concerned

2) Is the biz really as shady as everyone says it is

3) How did you end up getting signed

4) Which record companies, A&R's, Execs, to stay away from etc...

I remember one company that signed us up and the next week they got bankrupt ! Some advice : be very egoistic and egocentric and bitchier than the rest. If you wanna make some real money : DIY, sell your records yourself.

My band, Kenisia, is on Household Name Records. We get paid sales and MCPS royalties like clockwork; they are absolutely honest and honourable with us and all the other bands on HHN, and I won't hear a word said against them. We are a low-profile band, and HHN is a small independent label, but it's not about the money, it's about trust and integrity.

My first album was put out by a small but consistently good label (www.SpaceforMusic.com). Even Robert Rich has a release available there. However, I opted not to make new music for them simply because they weren't in a tremendous position to do anything for me that I can't do for myself. But they were more than willing to take a generous portion of "whatever" I generated.

Having said that, I think that if one is going to pursue a label option, it's only worth it if you get a sizable front. Yeah, you have to recoup that to see any more cash and since the odds are that you're not ever going to sell diddly squat, it's better to get some cash up front and just think of that as subsidy for the time you spent doing something you were gonna do for free. AND if you weren't gonna do it for free anyway, I think music is not where one needs to be. Just my opinion there, but I'm sick to death of musicians who only work to be paid. Be an artist, it's much more rewarding than money. But in case you get lucky and make some money, keep as much of your publishing as possible. I own all mine and if my stuff ever makes it into a film or game, I'm gonna get a double paycheck. Hmmm, more gear! :hihi:

Hope this rant helps.
